In an effort to make data storage more cost-effective, a group of researchers from National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany have created a DNA-based memory device that is "write-once-read-many-times" (WORM), and that uses ultraviolet (UV) light to make it possible to encode information. The device, described in a paper accepted to the AIP's Applied Physics Letters, consists of a thin film of salmon DNA that has been embedded with silver nanoparticles and then sandwiched between two electrodes. Shining UV light on the system enables a light-triggered synthesis process that causes the silver atoms to cluster into nano-sized particles, and readies the system for data encoding. In some cases, using DNA may be less expensive to process into memory devices than using traditional, inorganic materials like silicon, the researchers say.
At first, when no voltage or low voltage is applied through the electrodes to the UV-irradiated DNA, only a low current is able to pass through the composite; this corresponds to the "off" state of the device. But the UV irradiation makes the composite unable to hold charge under a high electric field, so when the applied voltage exceeds a certain threshold, an increased amount of charge is able to pass through. This higher state of conductivity corresponds to the "on" state of the device.
The team found that this change from low conductivity ("off") to high conductivity ("on") was irreversible: once the system had been turned on, it stayed on, no matter what voltage the team applied to the system. And once information is written, the device appears to retain that information indefinitely: the researchers report that the material's conductivity did not change significantly during nearly 30 hours of tracking. The authors hope the technique will be useful in the design of optical storage devices and suggest that it may have plasmonic applications as well.

The EU launched the Emissions Trading System (ETS) in 2005 in a bid to reduce carbon emissions of power stations and industrial plants, and extended the scheme to airlines from Sunday.
The move means airlines have to buy emissions permits to fly in Europe under a cap-and-trade scheme that has angered the US and Chinese governments and airlines worldwide.
"China, of course, will not cooperate with the European Union on the ETS," said Chai Haibo, deputy secretary-general of the China Air Transport Association (CATA).
"The CATA, on behalf of Chinese airlines, is strongly against the EU's improper practice of unilaterally forcing international airlines into its ETS," Chai said.
He said the Chinese government was considering "counter-measures" against the European Union, but gave no details.
State media has previously warned the EU scheme "infringes on national sovereignty, violates international aviation treaties and will lead to a trade war" in the sector.
It came into force on January 1 after the European Union's highest court rejected a challenge brought by US carriers last month.

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa ? Ron Paul is banking on a heavy youth turnout Tuesday in Iowa to lift his outsider bid to win the state's lead-off presidential caucuses.
The Texas congressman ignited huge applause at a youth rally for several presidential candidates on Tuesday, hours before voting in the evening's precinct caucuses was to begin.
Paul, who at age 76 is older than some of the students' grandparents, tossed out singer Kelly Clarkson's name during his talk but acknowledged not knowing much about the pop singer who has endorsed him.
Paul said he was somewhat puzzled by his support from young voters, but attributed it to a search for clarity by a cynical youth. "One reason is they identify with the Constitution, and I defend the Constitution."
Paul narrowly trailed Romney in Iowa polls in the last weekend before the caucuses, but had slipped some after coming under attack for views on foreign policy outside his party's mainstream. Young voters have typically been less reliable in the caucuses than voters over 35.
And while he traveled around the state Monday to rally supporters to turn out, Paul's aides sought to project confidence after Paul told ABC News he did not necessarily envision himself in the White House.
"Who knows where I'll be or what I'll do or what contribution I'll be making," Paul said in the interview.
Paul drew big enthusiastic crowds in Iowa Monday, hopping by private jet from Des Moines to cities in the east and north. He credited his statewide campaign organization, more highly structured than the apparatus that helped him reach fifth place in the 2008 GOP caucuses.
Paul said he considered his campaign as much a movement to rid the government of fiscal waste and excessive overseas commitments as it was an effort to seek the presidency.
While Paul does not plan to travel to the first-in-the-nation primary state of New Hampshire until Friday, he said he has high hopes of competing well there on Jan. 10. He is airing advertisements in South Carolina, the first Southern primary state, which holds its nominating contest Jan. 21.
However, he admitted that the path to the nomination beyond South Carolina is "a challenge."

They played with urgency Wednesday night, and their teammates followed.
Richardson and Nelson set the tone early, and Dwight Howard and Ryan Anderson dominated the rest of the way as the Orlando Magic clobbered the winless Washington Wizards 103-85 at Amway Center.
?I?m happy with what we did,? Van Gundy said. ?Look, in the NBA, anybody?s capable of beating you, and that team certainly is. They?ve got a lot of talent.?
Orlando never trailed, and Washington never tied the score.
Howard dominated inside, scoring a season-high 28 points and collecting 20 rebounds. He encountered minimal resistance from Wizards center JaVale McGee, who was fighting off a cold. Seven of Howard?s 11 baskets were dunks.
Anderson finished with 23 points and 15 rebounds, seven of them on the offensive glass.
?Coach made it a big focus for us to get on the rebounds and help Dwight out, obviously, because he?s rebounding the ball like crazy right now,? Anderson said.
Richardson scored just eight points, but he added four rebounds and five assists.
Richardson was aggressive early. He took Orlando?s first three shots ? making a layup and a 3-pointer ? and he also drew a foul on his counterpart at shooting guard, Nick Young.
?We play a lot of games, but that?s no excuse for not coming out with energy and ready to play,? Richardson said. ?I watched myself on film and saw that I?m not bringing energy, and I?m an energy player. That?s how I play, and I know I?ve got to do a better job and do it every game.?
Young is a streaky player, and he was terribly inefficient, making just five of his 15 shot attempts. He didn?t have an assist.
Washington?s dynamic second-year point guard, John Wall, fared better, but he wasn?t much of a factor.
Wall missed his first six shots. He finished with 14 points on 6-of-16 shooting and five assists.
?We got embarrassed,? Wall said.
After struggling in his previous four games, Nelson finished with seven points, three rebounds and nine assists.
Nelson felt that he had been thinking too much on the court, focusing too much on trying to keep everybody involved.
?I need to stay on the attack,? Nelson said.

The cast of "Les Miserables" is really shaping up to be quite the A-list ensemble. With folks like Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe, Helena Bonham Carter and Hugh Jackman already onboard for the big-screen adaptation of the stage show, word comes that both Taylor Swift and Amanda Seyfried are deep in talks for roles in the film.
Universal has offered Swift the role of Eponine and Seyfried the part of Cosette, Broadwayworld.com has confirmed. Lea Michele, Scarlett Johansson and Evan Rachel Wood had all reportedly been in the running for the coveted roles.
The website says rehearsals start later this month, so official casting news should come down the pipeline soon. The flick is slated to start shooting in May with Tom Hooper directing. It's expected to be released on December 7, 2012.
When Swift spoke to MTV News at the launch of her Wonderstruck perfume, she teased she was working on "some surprise projects that may or may not happen, and possibly some acting."
"I've just been so excited about what's gonna happen in the next year," she said. "I'm also really excited about [the next album]. I've been writing all the time. I've been writing so much for the new record. I can't believe I'm saying that already. It comes out in a year, but I'm already excited about it."
Seyfried displayed her singing chops in another Broadway-to-screen adaptation when she landed the lead in "Mamma Mia!" back in 2008. She is currently filming the Linda Lovelace biopic, "Lovelace," in L.A.
Would Taylor Swift do well in the role of Eponine? Sound off below!

LONDON (Reuters) ? Euro zone manufacturing activity declined for a fifth consecutive month in December, although at a slightly slower rate than November's 28-month record low, a survey showed on Monday, suggesting the decline would continue in the early months of 2012.
Markit's Eurozone Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) rose slightly in December to 46.9 from November's 46.4, but marked its fifth month below the 50 mark that divides growth from contraction. It was unchanged from an earlier preliminary reading.
Survey compiler Markit said levels of production and new orders fell in all of the euro zone countries covered by the survey for the second month running.
"Despite the rate of decline easing slightly in December, production appears to have been collapsing across the single currency area at a quarterly rate of approximately 1.5 percent in the final quarter of 2011," said Chris Williamson, chief economist at Markit.
"The survey also points to a strong likelihood of further declines in the first quarter of the new year, with producers cutting back headcounts, inventories and purchasing."
The euro zone economy is already stuck in a recession that will last until the second quarter of 2012, Reuters polls of economists suggested last month. They forecast the economy will probably see no growth this year.
Business and consumer confidence in the currency bloc has been eroded by a weakening global economy and by euro zone policymakers' failure to make progress on resolving the euro zone debt crisis. Austerity measures imposed to try and cut high debt levels in the currency bloc risk further undermining euro zone economies this year, analysts say.
The new orders component of the December PMI survey also picked up slightly, to 43.5 in December from 42.4 the previous month, but it remained weak and Markit warned of a persistent and worrying divergence in order levels and output.
"Worryingly, new orders are falling at a far faster rate than manufacturers have been cutting output, meaning firms have been reliant on orders placed earlier in the year to sustain current production levels," said Williamson.
"This is particularly evident in Germany, and suggests that operating capacity will be slashed in coming months unless demand revives."
The manufacturing jobs market was virtually stagnant in December compared with November. The euro zone unemployment rate edged up to 10.3 percent in October, a figure that encompasses very high levels of joblessness in peripheral countries such as Spain and Greece with relatively firm labor markets in France and Germany. Wenger is turning to Henry, who scored a club-record 226 goals in eight years at Arsenal between 1999-2007, to fill the gap left by the impending departures of Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh to the African Cup of Nations next month.
"To cover for two months is ideal," Wenger said. "He has the experience and the quality. He knows the club and can help the players on and off the pitch."
Henry, who has been training with Arsenal during the MLS offseason, established himself as a star in his first stint at the London club before moving to Spanish giant Barcelona.
His legacy could be enhanced further if he can inspire Wenger's side in a crucial period of matches through to his return to the United States in March, before which he could play a big role in seven league games and the first leg of Arsenal's Champions League last-16 match against AC Milan.
"I know it can only be positive," said Wenger, who converted Henry from a skinny winger to a muscly striker after signing him from Italian team Juventus in 1999.
"He has exceptional talent ? he is a very intelligent man and has a desire to help the club. But it is difficult to measure how positive an influence he is."
Henry's debut is likely to come against second-tier side Leeds in the third round of the FA Cup on Jan. 9, although there is an outside chance he could play a part in the league match at Fulham on Monday.
What is for sure, Arsenal fans will not witness the Henry of old, when he terrorized English defenses with his pace, touch and power to help Arsenal to two Premier League titles and three FA Cups.
Nudged out to the periphery in the last of his three seasons at Barcelona, where he was often shunted out of position to the left wing, Henry has spent the past year in the more relaxed environs of the MLS.
Instead, Wenger is relying on Henry's intelligence to see him through.
"You and I are conscious that he is 34 years old but he has not lost his class or his brain," Wenger said. "That will be just enough for us."
Henry will likely be the understudy to Robin van Persie, who has belatedly taken over the Frenchman's mantle as Arsenal's talismanic attacker and scored 16 league goals this season. In 2011, Van Persie has scored 34 times in the league and needs two goals against Queens Park Rangers on Saturday to equal the Premier League record in a calendar year, set by Alan Shearer in 1995.
Arsenal's other option up front is South Korea captain Park Ju-young, who has struggled for first-team chances since his move from Monaco in the offseason. Russia captain Andrey Arshavin, barely used by Wenger this season, and England winger Theo Walcott also can act as makeshift strikers but are more accustomed to playing out wide.
Renowned for his expertise at bringing youth prospects through to the first team, it won't be the first time Wenger has turned to a former star to help Arsenal on a short-term basis.
In March, Jens Lehmann ? like Henry, one of Arsenal's "Invincibles" who helped the team go through the 2003-04 league season unbeaten ? was signed to help solve a goalkeeping shortage.
