Simon Says Stamp and Show: challenge: house rules

This is the time of year when I fill my house with decorations. One of my passions is the small collection of houses that I?ve assembled - both store bought and homemade in my own quirky village.

This week to join in our challenge you can be inspired to create your own little house, alter an exiting little decor piece that isn't quite how you'd like it to be, play on canvas, use a favorite home sentiment or house stamp on a card or tag?-? or?anything else you can think of! I (May) am such a fan of taking little wooden houses and covering them with my favorite papers and craft supplies - especially in December! I had to take this challenge as an opportunity to create a new treasure for my collection. Using some white gold and clear glitter, my Pink Paislee papers, Tim Holtz trees, and a few other goodies you wouldn't believe how fast this house came together. I love making whimsical little houses and taking this bird house and turning it into a snow covered confection for my shelf was such fun. I really think plenty of glitter is the key if you want to really get a magical snowed in look. I love how my buttons and all the little details came together - this is my favorite house yet! Tracy loves Christmas, filling the house with home decor pieces and scent from Christmas candles so this piece reflects the enjoyment she gets from the season.I love losing myself in a piece like this, deciding on how to fill each room is so much fun, I spent many hours decorating and painting and gathering bits and pieces and enjoyed every minute. The reindeer creates a focal point and dimension in my house cut from mount board using the Reindeer Flight die. Die cuts add lots of interest and further dimension using Memory Box Bubble Joy, Curved Antlers, Pop Up Joy and Simon Says Stamp Mod Tree dies. Do I give this away to a family member for Christmas, or do I keep it myself? Decisions, decisions!

?

Suzz was hoarding an old game board to use for a special project and decided that this challenge was the perfect time to bring it out!

?

This little house in Sandra Mouwen's art journal represents her cozy home this season.I really enjoy the winter when everything is covered in snow! Everything looks so peaceful then. Hopefully we will have a white Christmas this year! That brings the holiday so much more coziness. For this challenge I made an art journal page, where I used as background the pretty Tissue Wrap Melange. To tone it down a bit I covered it with some Studio Gesso. On the edges of the page I rubbed some Studio Sky Blue and Classic Teal paint with my fingers. For the snowflakes I used the gorgeous Let it Snow stencil from Dyan Reavely. To create some snow on the ground I used some Lace.

?

Sarah caved and gave into the early Christmas vibes with a Grungy little house...I love metal but always go for rusty tones so I fancied creating something with the silver tones of Christmas yet without losing my love of metal. I decided to go for Tim's industrial metal look and thought it would be fun to try out the same look with my Rosette die. I got my hubby to saw off a chunk of wood and then set about covering it with Metal Foil Sheets before going to town with my Ten Seconds Studio embossing tools. I spent a while choosing my words and thought this extract from a famous carol was just perfect. Have yourself a Merry Grungy Christmas!Candy's vintage Christmas house is sure to be a welcome addition to her Christmas decor this holiday season! Trace has been wanting to make a "house" mixed media board for quite some time.

?

?

Dan has created his Santa-themed house to help spread the "Believe" message.Although I'm British, my first 5 or 6 Christmases were spent in the USA in the 60s (I know, I know, I don't look a day over 21). Consequently, the images that represent all that's most magical about the holiday for me are Americana Christmas images from that period. Luckily for me, the Shiny Brite ornament boxes and Twinkle Tone Santa that I remember so well have been brought back to me courtesy of Tim Holtz's Seasonal Paper Stack. I painted the wooden house with Claudine Hellmuth A Dash of Red paint and toned it down a little with Gathered Twigs distress ink. I used the Calendar 2, Holiday Wishes, Santa's Wish and Odds and Ends stamp sets and a couple of Numerals coloured with Tarnished Brass distress stain. The roof tiles (which don't show in this photo) were cut from the Retro Grunge paper stack. I've already planned where this is going to be displayed and I plan to pack it away carefully and bring it out every year!

?

Anna-Karin made a winter wonderland house to add to her growing village of houses:Terry made a Christmas House, a House filled with Joy, Love and LaughterWhen I saw the theme for this weeks challenge, I immediately was thinking about a sweet little bird house, it was just a perfect home piece for the challenge because after all the little birds need a home too for Christmas. This house is filled with joy, love, laughter, and family because I think that is what Christmas should be about. I worked on the background with the fabulous papers from Graphic45, wooden stars, those gorgeous snowflakes from Tim Holtz and lots of accessories. I played with crackle and placed a Christmas rose.?and use Distress ink for all the borders, a pearl string for the roof and snow at the bottom of the Christmas House.

?

This week's challenge gave Ashli the perfect excuse to craft some wacky and wonky Christmas houses.I have always admired hand-crafted little houses, especially holiday houses. This week's theme was the perfect reason for me to turn a pile of recycled cardboard into some wonderfully wacky little decor pieces. To get started, I constructed the "bones" of my houses out of cardboard and tape. Then, a good coat of Modeling Paste gave my houses some strength. After layering on some Lily Bee and Basic Grey patterned papers, I went to town decorating my houses with Stickles, Mists, Metal Foil, and wood veneer snowflakes. This little trio adds the perfect amount of whimsy to my holiday decor!

?

I?encourage you to check out each of the design team member's blogs for more photos, supply lists, and more.?Simply click on their name (above the photo of their project) to visit their blog.

BCS bonanza: Alabama vs. Notre Dame

Alabama vs. Notre Dame. The BCS championship game couldn't get much bigger.

The Crimson Tide locked up a spot in the title game in Miami on Jan. 7 with a 32-28 victory over Georgia for the Southeastern Conference championship Saturday.

Sunday's selection show is just a formality.

The hype can begin now for what could be the most-watched BCS title game since the system was implemented in 1998. It'd be hard to find two more popular programs and a more enticing matchup.

The top-ranked Fighting Irish (12-0) have won eight AP national titles ? matching Alabama for the most ? but none since 1988. They'll be playing in their first BCS championship game.

Alabama (12-1) is making its third BCS title game appearance in four years. The Crimson Tide is trying to become the first team to win back-to-back BCS titles, and three in four years.

"We created a great opportunity for ourselves," Alabama coach Nick Saban said after his Tide beat the Bulldogs at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

The Irish and Tide have played six times, though not since 1987. Notre Dame is 5-1, including a 24-23 victory in the Sugar Bowl in 1973 that gave the Irish a national championship. They also played in the Orange Bowl in 1975, and the Irish won 13-11.

The buildup for this one, however, will be unmatched.

A return to glory for Brian Kelly's Fighting Irish or a dynasty for Saban's Tide? Seven straight BCS titles for the SEC and the end of a 23-year national championship drought for Notre Dame?

There will no doubt be plenty of people tuning in to find out.

The highest rated BCS championship game was Southern California, going for three straight national titles and back-to-back BCS championships, against Texas in 2006 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. That game drew a 21.7 rating.

Alabama's BCS title win against Texas in 2010 drew a 17.17 rating, a close third behind the 17.4 Florida-Ohio State drew in 2007.

Considering Notre Dame's regular-season finale against USC had a 10.3 rating, higher than any of the BCS bowls last season other than the championship game, it's a safe to say this year's championship game has a chance to blow by the record.

The rest of the BCS lineup also fell into place on championship weekend.

Earlier Saturday, No. 12 Oklahoma won 24-17 at TCU to finish the regular season 10-2, with at least a share of the Big 12 title. The Sooners should find themselves in the BCS one way or another.

On Friday night, Stanford grabbed a spot in the Rose Bowl and the chances for a BCS buster dwindled.

Northern Illinois' 44-37 victory in double overtime against Kent State on Friday night gave the Huskies the Mid-American Conference title, and ended the Golden Flashes' BCS hopes.

Kent State needed to move up one spot in the BCS standings to No. 16 to earn an automatic bid. Northern Illinois came into the weekend 21st in the standings. The Huskies have a chance to get into the top 16 and get into the BCS, too ? but it will be tough.

Kent State's loss could be the Big 12's gain. If neither of the MAC teams nor Boise State, which beat Nevada 27-21 to earn a share of the Mountain West title, earns that so-called BCS buster bid, the Sooners (10-2) look like a logical choice to be selected, even if No. 7 Kansas State locks up the Big 12's BCS bid Saturday night.

The Wildcats needed only to beat No. 23 Texas at home to earn a spot in the Fiesta Bowl. A loss would send Oklahoma to the Fiesta Bowl and have Kansas State hoping for an at-large bid only a few weeks after being No. 1 in the BCS standings.

No. 15 Clemson (10-2) could also be in the mix for an at-large bid.

No. 8 Stanford locked up the Rose Bowl bid by beating UCLA 27-24 on Friday night and will play the winner of Saturday night's Big Ten championship game between Wisconsin and No. 14 Nebraska.

No. 13 Florida State and Georgia Tech were playing in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game later for a bid to the Orange Bowl.

Louisville earned the Big East's BCS bid by beating Rutgers on Thursday night, 20-17.

Turning a deaf ear to society

By Nikos Xydakis

At this critical time, a time of abject sadness and defeatism, the government had a golden opportunity to boost the public?s morale, and at no financial cost to boot. It could have achieved this by simply drafting a new taxation law that would be more equitable, more effective and much, much easier to be implemented.

But, it didn?t.

So far, the information that has leaked regarding changes being made to the tax system suggest that it will be neither simple nor fairer. In contrast, it appears to be designed to punish families with children at a time when the demographic statistics are showing a sharp drop in birthrates, while there has been nothing said about any new mechanisms to curb burgeoning tax evasion.

Taxation is an area that tests the stuff of a democratic state more than any other. It shows whether a state is prepared to treat all of its citizens fairly and equally and if it wants to be a just and a functional state. However, implementing the kind of changes that would make this possible requires a firm understanding of reality, a government that heeds the deeper needs of society and is aware of its shifting expectations.

This is not happening in Greece, mostly because there has always been a deep chasm separating the political system from society.

The political system, which is already lacking in ability and skill, seems more interested in expending valuable time and energy on self-preservation and its own parasitic reproduction rather than reaching out to a sorely tested and increasingly hostile society.

Society on the other hand has suffered through three years of losses and increasing pain, and has changed the way it thinks and acts on many levels. It has lowered its threshold of expectations almost to zero, it has adapted to a poorer way of life and has accepted massive changes to they way people work and are paid.

For the majority, the only driving force left is the survival instinct.

Most Greeks are ready for change and mentally prepared for it. They are waiting to hear a plan, to be presented with a set of goals and to feel a sense of solidarity once more. Meanwhile, in the absence of a plan and goals, they drift away, downgrade their needs, shrivel up and turn their backs on collectivity.

The political system has not only failed to synchronize itself with society, the sovereign citizenry, the people who gave it its mandate; it has also failed to perceive the huge magnitude of the changes that this society had undergone.

What Men Love About Women (Part 1) | Psychology Today

(Update: I've been rightfully criticized that the title of this post is misleading, so let me correct and atone. This is the first of two parts. The next post will focus on what men love about women -- and believe me, men have a lot of positive things to say about women -- but this first post contains a few of their frustrations.)

Last month, I shared some thoughts from women who participated in my recent survey. I asked them what they like about men, and what they find frustrating. (You can find that post here.) The survey is part of my 2014 book, The Woman?s Guide to How Men Think: Love, Commitment, and the Male Mind.?I'm posting a few of the responses as a great big thank-you to all who have generously participated.

This month, it?s the men?s turn. To my own surprise, a great number of men have responded to the survey. Most had good things to say, a few were critical, and some were just plain confused. As one man put it, ?I understand everything about women, except all those weird things they do.?

Confused or not, it seems that men like women. A lot.

First, the Complaints

Before we discuss what?s great about women, here are some male frustrations. One of the most common complaints I hear from men, both in the survey and in the clinic, is the fear that no argument can end positively. They fear they are destined to lose, and that women never forgive.

?I get a lot of grief for not communicating better, even though I have good intentions. Men are always told we need to communicate better. What do women need to do better? Nothing, it seems. Always, the fault seems to be mine. Can a woman lift as much weight as a man? In general no, and who expects her to? A man would be a jerk for suggesting that she should. Why then are we men constantly expected to communicate the same way women do? There are inherent differences between men and women.?

?When we [men] argue, we?re arguing about that particular conflict; you?re arguing about that conflict plus past conflicts.?

?We don?t expect our women to be perfect, but they seem to expect that from us. We?re not perfect. Neither are they.?

?They don?t forget anything. The old mistakes, purchases that didn?t work out, the thing said in anger.? You can never take them back, even if you wish you hadn?t said them, and they always bring it back up in an argument. They will not accept an apology and forget it.?

?We think you expect us to be perfect when you remember our past mistakes but forget our successes.?

?It seems like I can knock myself out doing repairs, cutting firewood, working on the cars, even housework(!) but somehow, there?s an issue with what I HAVEN?T done. That really makes me retreat. I don?t need to discuss everything and explain what I was thinking at any given moment!?

?I guess, in the end, men just want to remove the guesswork. We just want to know that there IS a right answer.?

Another common frustration: the different approaches men and women take toward fixing problems.

?Women seem to focus more on the problem rather than the solution.?

?I think guys would be more inclined to be more communicative if women would be more agreeable to get to the point and fix the problem, rather than avoid it and focus on the symptoms.?

?Women don?t like to fix problems; rather, ?venting? about it is often enough. This, of course, just means that the problem comes back later and we go through the cycle all over again.?

One of the most common frustrations that women expressed was about male silence. Here?s what men had to say in defense of silence and stoicism:

?Being quiet is a way to process, much in the same way that women need to talk to process?

?She should understand there are times were I just want to sit calm, think about it, and remain silent, at least for a couple of minutes. Or she should at least understand that she?s simply better than me at arguing.?

?When I talk, it is to convey information and thoughts or ask for your opinion. Just chattering away about random details makes it really hard to figure out what, if anything, I am expected to do. I realize that sometimes there is no action item for me in their 50 stage loosely related detailed report, but most of the time there is something they want me to do at step 37 of 50 and I can miss it due to low signal to noise ratio. I wish I could tell my wife how hard it is to follow her train of seemingly unrelated thoughts sometimes.?

?Because men relate by doing things together, we rely more on nonverbal communication.?

?If we are being silent it?s because we either (a) don?t want to hurt your feelings with the truth, (b) trying to word our reply just right so we don?t hurt your feelings even more or (c) don?t know what else to say to comfort you because you?ve already said it all!"

Bad Boys and Good Men

One of the things that confounds men is women?s attraction to ?bad boys.? Men who regard themselves as communicative, humble, and reliable find it baffling when women choose disrespectful men.

?Why do you date men who treat you poorly and miss out on the good ones? We have to compete with the bad ones. Women need to look beyond urges or first impressions.?

?I wish we understood what it is women want in a man. I have learned that though you say you want a nice, emotional guy, those aren?t the guys that attract you.?

?Honest guys don?t try to portray themselves as perfect, but there are definitely plenty of guys that will put on that mask so they can ?bag? a girl and then leave her when he?s done. Ironically, they get most of the women... then women complain ?You just can?t trust guys. All they ever want to do is sleep with you, and they will say or do anything to accomplish that goal.? I?m sure she was warned about this guy from SOMEONE and she used the typical excuse: ?No! He?s not like that at all. With me it?s different!.??

?I happen to be rather good at communicating what I feel and need, and notice that a lot of women find this unattractive.?

?We are so basic, so easy to keep happy. I think in a way this frustrates women. I think many women want us to meet them on the more emotional plane but that contradicts what may have originally attracted them to us in the beginning. They want the strong, silent type or the bad boy but once the relationship is up and running then they want us to be more sensitive or open to talking about more things. Unfortunately, I don?t really think you can have it both ways.?

?Women will never truly understand that they are the reason there are poor quality men in the world. If women stopped befriending and forgiving misogynists, the world would be better off.?

?I think women have a hard time understanding what kind of guy is good for them. They often choose men who (as other men already see) are bad for them, then bitch after they get dumped. They like confident men. Well, men are rarely super confident around women they care about. They are however confident around women they don?t care about. Why? Because they don?t care whether the woman likes them or not and are freely themselves. This attracts women to men who don?t like them much. Guys can see this a million miles away. Women have a hard time figuring this out.??

Let?s leave it there for now, and in the next post I?ll let you know what men had to say about making women happy, keeping a peaceful relationship, and a few of the many things that men like most about women. (If you don?t want to wait, the whole thing is here.)

Using Social Media for Social Good - Morra Aarons-Mele - Harvard ...

Last week I wrote about #GivingTuesday, a nationwide campaign to create an annual day of giving en masse to charities or good causes. The event was largely marketed through social media, incredible word of mouth from over 2500 partner organizations, and many stories in traditional media outlets from NPR to regional newspapers. Being three days since the event took place, there's now some convincing evidence that this real-life case study is proving the hard ROI of social media.

#GivingTuesday had its share of cynics. They objected mostly to two things: First, as a social media marketing campaign, it risked being a PR stunt that did very little for increasing charitable donations or actions. Second, that staging a national day of giving would "cannibalize" traditional end of year giving. I can only address the first point here, as the second remains to be seen.

Take the fundraising firm Blackbaud, which processed $10 million in online donations on inaugural #GivingTuesday ? a massive 53% increase when compared to the Tuesday after Thanksgiving the previous year. Or #GivingTuesday partner Panthera, whose VP Andrea Heydlauff reports "We received over 450 individual donations, amounting to just over $300,000... So far over 40% are new donors. This has surpassed all of our expectations on so many levels and is truly a memorable and perhaps the most significant event in our fundraising history."

So the question is: Did #GivingTuesday work because of social media? We'll never know, although it did become a trending topic on Twitter in the United States on Nov. 1, then again on Nov. 26 and it trended for much of the day on Nov. 27. It also had support from some heavy social media hitters: Bill Gates tweeted his support (retweeted almost 9,000 times), and the White House blogged about the campaign.

As in this case, the intense, continued, and varied discussion on social media can become a modern telethon, minus the hard costs. But it doesn't always work that way.

In my experience social media is only truly effective for fundraising when there is a disaster of incredible magnitude, or perhaps in a high-profile political campaign. For every other cause, you create real action not by chasing the reassuring trending topics, but with old-fashioned organizing. You need a great idea, and you need the network in place to create the wildfire of discussion among diverse networks of online influencers.

#GivingTuesday was a compelling idea: Celebrate a national day of giving back after the consumer glut of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. That fits right into the current zeitgeist, and the call to action was strong and clear.

But how do you create that network? Elbow grease. #GivingTuesday didn't only work because it was a cool social media campaign. It worked because of months of groundwork. This included convening thousands of partners who could sign on for free and contribute in any way they liked, giving lots of people with strong online influence skin in the game. They all promoted it heavily to their various networks. And there, social media was only one piece of the equation: partners also used traditional channels such as email marketing and donor relations.

Why haven't we seen something like #GivingTuesday before? Because even as our increased connectivity has challenged long-held assumptions about what constitutes media, authority, and even friendship, we're still holding on to old-fashioned notions of who gets to be a philanthropist, and how charity should work.

When I interviewed him at the 2012 Social Good Summit, The New York Times columnist and humanitarian Nicholas Kristof spoke about how businesses and their products have smart and successful marketing strategies, but important world issues like poverty and clean water never get the publicity and attention they deserve: "People flinch at the idea of marketing for those [issues] because marketing sounds like something companies do," Kristof said. "But it's so much more important to market ? to get the word out, to message right ? about issues of life or death."

What's more, social-good marketers need to address different audiences using different platforms. Kristof's Half The Sky movement used a "transmedia strategy" and platforms from a PBS documentary to Facebook games to reach ? and spur to action ? women and men of all ages and backgrounds.

It's time for marketers in the social good space to fully embrace marketing across media, but also to take a deep breath and realize that every successful campaign relies on a smart social media strategy ? and always, good old-fashioned people power.
