S. Africa's Tiger Brands to up stake in Dangote Flour

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African consumer goods group Tiger Brands is offering to buy out some minority shareholders in Nigeria's Dangote Flour Mills as it expands in fast-growing African markets.

Earlier this year Tiger Brands bought a 63 percent stake in the flour and pasta maker in its third and biggest deal yet in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country and second-largest economy, which is seen as a growth area for consumer and food products.

Owner Aliko Dangote's holding firm Dangote Industries Ltd kept a 10 percent shareholding in the flour mill after Tiger Brands' purchase.

Tiger Brands said in a presentation on its full-year earnings that it is making an offer to minorities in Dangote Flour, which is expected to be completed by March next year.

"We will go up to a maximum of 70 percent in total, leaving the balance in Nigerian hands," Tiger Brands' chief executive Peter Matlare told Reuters after the presentation.

Tiger Brands, a maker of bread, breakfast cereal and energy drinks, expanded outside its home base last year with acquisitions in Nigeria and Ethiopia.

Matlare said the company will seek acquisitions in Africa, as well as growing its own business.

Tiger Brands posted a 7 percent rise in full-year earnings, helped by higher prices. It said diluted headline earnings per share for the year to end September reached 1,654.2 cents from 1,545 cents last year.

Headline earnings, the main profit gauge in South Africa, exclude certain one-off items.

The company said revenue rose 11 percent to 22.7 billion rand. It declared a final dividend of 555 cents per share.

But the company said it expected 2013 to be a challenging year as consumers remain under pressure, with economic growth sluggish, unemployment high and inflation accelerating.

Tiger Brands shares were down 1.5 percent at 273.67 rand at 1055 GMT.

Pursuing Copyright Infringement is Now Cheaper and Easier for UK Photogs copyright

Photographers based in the UK now have an easier and cheaper legal path to take if they discover someone infringing upon their copyrights. Chris Cheesman of Amateur Photographer writes that photographers can now receive do-it-yourself justice without having to hire a lawyer:

Intellectual property disputes can now be resolved using the ?small claims track? in the Patents County Court (PCC), following a Government announcement of a ?simpler and easier? system last month. Photographers can pursue damages for breach of copyright, for up to ?5,000, without even appointing a solicitor, unlike before where they may have been put off by a potentially long, and expensive, legal fight.

Furthermore, the damages limit may rise to ?10,000 under Ministry of Justice proposals, possibly as early as next year. Crucially, under the new system, photographers can avoid the prospect of a lengthy court battle and the fear of having to pay the legal fees of the successful party if they lose.

Apparently the US Government is currently looking into doing something similar.

Ricky Hatton believes with age he has become wiser ? Boxing News

Former welterweight titlist Ricky Hatton believes he has become wiser and smarter with age, which will help him grab the upper hand against Vyacheslav Senchenko in his comeback bout. Hatton is scheduled to face Senchenko in a 10-round fight at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, England.

Hatton, who retired from professional boxing almost two years back, currently stands with 45 wins, 2 losses and 32 knockouts in his portfolio. On the other hand, his opponent Senchenko stands with 32 wins, 1 loss and 21 knockouts.

?I was known for ballooning up, putting 30 or 40 pounds between fights,? said Hatton, who is now 34 and hoping to be the same top fighter he was before his knockout losses to Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.

?It was absolutely criminal for me to do that at 24 years of age. I can?t be doing that at 34 years of age. I?m becoming older, becoming wiser,? he added.

Hatton suffered the first loss of his career at the hands of American fighter Floyd Mayweather Jr. He was knocked out by the unbeaten American in the tenth round. Hatton then went on to fight former WBO welterweight titlist Manny Pacquiao to suffer yet another knockout defeat of his career. However, against Pacquiao, the defeat was more devastating than his previous one, as he was knocked out in the second round of the showdown.

?It was hard for a man who had so much pride in himself to get destroyed by Manny Pacquiao,? added Hatton.

?I was having to tell my girlfriend, ?I need a hug. Help me, please, I?m scared,?? he added.

Hatton went through severe depression and alcoholism during his retirement phase but now he is back. He wants to prove to himself that he still is the same fighter he once was. While his rivals Pacquiao and Mayweather are looking forward to retirement, Hatton is eager to make his comeback in the sport to ensure he cement his legacy better than ever before.

If Hatton defeats Senchenko, he will move on to face WBA welterweight titlist Paulie Malignaggi next year, as reports suggest.

Sri Lanka removes restrictions on trading vehicles imported under ...

Lankapage LogoNov 18, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government has decided to remove the ban on the sale of duty-free vehicles imported by senior public servants to another party.
The restrictions imposed on the resale of vehicles imported under duty concessions were eased as proposed in the 2013 budget.
A spokesman of the Ministry of Finance said that the decision was informed in writing to the Director General of Customs on November 16.
The regulation is valid for the vehicles already imported under tax relief.
Accordingly, the public servants can now sell their vehicles at any time after importation. So far, they could not transfer its ownership to a third party for three years.
However, the vehicle market sources say that the cars imported under tax relief were traded underhand bypassing the restrictions.

New campaign encourages companies to hire vets - Army News ...

http://www.armytimes.com/news/2012/11/military-hire-a-veteran-111912w/

Evidence that employers are reluctant to hire veterans due to their potential physical and psychological injuries has prompted the Army to launch a new effort to educate businesses and encourage them to hire former service members.

The Army has joined with the Society for Human Resources Management, the nation?s largest trade association of hiring professionals, to create the ?Hire a Veteran? campaign.

?We?ve realized that we need to help prepare employers and HR professionals and ensure that their concerns aren?t a deterrent to employing these great veterans,? said Brig. Gen. David Bishop, commander of the Army?s Warrior Transition Command, at a press briefing in Washington on Monday.

The campaign?s central message is that hiring veterans is not only a way to support former service members, but also simply good for a company by bringing in new, effective employees with valuable skills and experience.

?This campaign is about setting the conditions, not just about preparing our soldiers for new careers, but preparing our employers for this unique population that has so much to offer to their bottom line,? Bishop said.

The effort includes a video as well as online resources for employers who may have questions about where to find job-hunting veterans, as well as what their legal responsibilities might be under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

A recent survey of hiring managers nationwide revealed that 43 percent of employers cite post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury as a potential challenge when hiring people with military experience.

Some 52 percent of employers say veterans are likely to struggle with the transition from the structured and hierarchical culture in the military to a civilian work environment, according to the survey, conducted by the Society for Human Resources Managers.

The ?Hire a Veteran? campaign includes extensive information for employers about their requirements under federal law, which says employers must provide ?reasonable accommodations? for veterans with a service-related disability.

?The first step for employers is to understand that not all vets need accommodations, and if they do need accommodations, sometimes it is easily made. PTSD is severe in some and not so severe in others? said Jeff Pon, the Society of Human Resource Management?s chief strategy officer, who also attended the briefing Monday.

While the survey showed that a majority of employers said accommodating veterans costs money, about 83 percent of those same employers said those costs were outweighed by the benefits the veterans brought to the workplace.

In many cases, providing reasonable accommodations might involve nothing more than providing an ergonomic chair for a veteran with a back injury, or allowing someone with PTSD to avoid sitting at a desk with his or her back to the door.

?We also want to drive home the fact that providing reasonable accommodations for a veteran in the workplace is not difficult, inordinately expensive or a burden ? especially when compared to the value that these great Americans bring to each organization,? Bishop said.

China's Xi warns party of corruption scourge

BEIJING (AP) ? China's new leader Xi Jinping warned officials they must fight the increasingly serious problem of corruption or risk ruining the country, though he offered no specific new proposals on how to combat the scourge.

In a weekend speech that was carried Monday by the official Xinhua News Agency, Xi told the new 25-member Politburo that the party must be vigilant against graft, noting that corruption in other countries in recent years has prompted major social unrest and the collapse of governments.

"The large number of facts tells us that if the problem of corruption becomes increasingly severe, it will lead to the ruin of the party and the country!" Xinhua quoted Xi as saying in a speech that can be read as an indication of the priorities of the incoming administration.

In his remarks, Xi dwelled at length on the importance of the party's theoretical foundations in Marxism, Leninism and the ideas espoused by his predecessors, but said leaders also had to be mindful of the practical realities of running the country and to reconnect with the population. His remarks on corruption stood out for being relatively free of political jargon all too common in Communist Party speeches.

"In recent years, within our party there have been serious discipline violations, the nature of which has been very bad, with a terrible political impact, causing much alarm," said Xi, who took over as China's Communist Party leader last Thursday.

Xi's language was unusually direct for a top leader, indicating his seriousness about the problem, but his speech gave few indications of how the party could better police itself, said Jean-Pierre Cabestan, a political scientist at Hong Kong Baptist University.

"He used strong words. It was clearly a warning: 'We have to do something about this,'" Cabestan said. "Clearly, for him, the crux of the matter is corruption. The trouble is, of course, that he doesn't tell us much about what are going to be the efficient tools or weapons he will put together to fight corruption."

Xi urged officials at all levels to obey anti-corruption regulations and to better limit their relatives or associates from abusing their influence for personal gain, but he gave no indication of any independent mechanism for investigating graft.

The party, which controls courts, police and prosecutors, has proved feeble in policing itself yet does not want to undermine its control by empowering an independent body to do so. Some officials have been required to report income, real estate holdings and other wealth to their superiors since 2010, but the measure has done little to staunch the graft.

A slew of corruption investigations have targeted high-level leaders in recent years, most notably former Politburo member Bo Xilai, who was purged this year after an aid disclosed that his wife murdered a British businessman. Bo is accused of obstructing the investigation into the murder as well as unspecified corruption while in office.

Foreign media reports in recent weeks also have documented massive wealth accumulated by Chinese leaders' families.

Xi took over as China's top leader last Thursday when he assumed the posts of party leader and head of the military commission from outgoing leader Hu Jintao. Hu will retain the title of president ? the ceremonial head of state ? until next spring when he hands that position over to Xi as well.

Xi and other party leaders have often reiterated that more needs to be done to root out deep-seated corruption in China that threatens the ruling Communist Party's legitimacy.

Xi also emphasized the need to narrow the gap between the party and the people in what seemed like an implicit critique of his predecessors, said Willy Lam, a political analyst at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Lam said Xi's frequent references to "the people" in his speech indicated that "the past two decades have resulted somehow in the people feeling alienated from the party."

"Now what he's saying is that from day one is that we shall stick to the people. We will do what the people want," Lam said.
