Space station astronauts land in Kazakhstan

Three astronauts touched down in the dark, chilly expanses of central Kazakhstan onboard a Soyuz capsule Monday after a 125-day stay at the International Space Station.

NASA's Sunita Williams, Russian astronaut Yury Malenchenko and Aki Hoshide of Japan's JAXA space agency landed at 07:56 a.m. local time (0156 GMT) northeast of the town of Arkalyk.

Eight helicopters rushed search-and-recovery crew to assist the crew, whose capsule did not parachute onto the exact planned touchdown site due to a minimal delay in procedures.

With the departure of the outgoing crew, NASA astronaut Kevin Ford has taken command of the space station, where he remains with Russian colleagues Oleg Novitsky and Yevgeny Tarelkin. They will be joined next month by NASA's Tom Marshburn, Chris Hadfield of the Canadian Space Agency, and Russia's Roman Romanenko.

The Soyuz is the only means for international astronauts to reach the orbiting laboratory since the decommissioning of the U.S. shuttle fleet in 2011.

Williams, Malenchenko and Hoshide undocked from the space station Sunday at 1023 GMT to begin their return to earth.

Around 28 minutes before touchdown, the three modules of the Soyuz craft separated, leaving the 2.1-meter tall capsule to begin its entry into orbit.

A series of parachutes deployed to bring the capsule to gentle floating speed.

Winds pulled the descent module on its side in the snowy terrain, which is a common occurrence, but the crew was nonetheless swiftly hoisted out by the recovery crew and lifted onto reclining chairs and swaddled in blankets to shield them from the 12 Fahrenheit degree (-11 Celsius degree) temperature.

The chairs are designed to afford the astronauts comfortable acclimatization after months of living in gravity-free conditions.

"For me, everything was very good," a smiling Williams told recovery staff, speaking in Russian.

Malenchenko has now spent 642 days in space, making him the sixth most experienced space traveler in history.

Williams has a spent a total of 322 days in space over two missions. She and Hoshide conducted a crucial spacewalk earlier this month to work on a leaky radiator system outside the space station.

That took Williams' total cumulative spacewalk time to 50 hours and 40 minutes ? a record for a female astronaut.

NASA says the returning expedition conducted a range of scientific experiments while at the space station, included testing radiation levels on the orbiting outpost, assessing the effects of microgravity on the spinal cord, and investigating melting glaciers, seasonal changes and human impacts on the ecosystem.

The crew was to be taken to the town of Kostanai, from where Williams and Hoshide would board a Gulfstream jet for a trip to Houston, Texas, while Malenchenko was to return to a Russian space facility outside Moscow.

NASA footage showed celebrating recovery workers at the landing site erecting a sign marking the successful touchdown.

(AP) ? Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart said Derek Dooley improved Tennessee football during his three-year tenure as the Volunteers' coach ? just not enough to keep the job.

Dooley, 44, was fired Sunday after posting a 15-21 record that lacked wins over ranked opponents and Southeastern Conference foes. Dooley was 4-19 in SEC games and 0-15 against Top 25 teams. Tennessee (4-7, 0-7 SEC) is 1-14 in the SEC over the last two years.

Hart said Sunday that Dooley improved the team despite inheriting a tough situation, but he noted that "you can't ignore the results at the end of the day."

Tennessee's 41-18 loss to Vanderbilt on Saturday guarantees the Vols their third consecutive losing season.

Offensive coordinator Jim Chaney will coach the Vols' season finale.

NaNoWriMo Is A Bust For Me | Jamie Todd Rubin

Posted on 18 November 2012

It?s time for me to admit defeat. I?m not going to ?win? NaNoWriMo this year. And I?m not going to get this novella done before the end of the month. There are several reasons why, the least of which are schedule and other time commitments. The real issue is that the novella is not going as I?d like it to, which tells me that I am not yet at the level of skill to write it the way I want.

I think I?ve discussed this before, but one thing that really sets apart a ?professional? writer from everyone else is the ability to push through and get the job done, no matter how much they struggle. I may not that be quite at that point yet. But I think there is another characteristic of a ?professional? and that is knowing when to set a story aside. As a short fiction writer, you can?t get too bogged down in any one story and the story that I was writing for NaNoWriMo, like a story I tried writing several years ago, is getting mired in mud. So it is time to move on.

There are other distractions competing for my attention as well. I?ve become fairly obsessed with my re-reading of?The Lord of the Rings, and when I should be writing, I am reading and then feeling properly guilty about ignoring my writing.

So what?s next? I wrote a short (1,700 word) story a week or so ago and I?d like to get the second draft of that done, and perhaps expanded a bit. There are also at least two or three other stories, much shorter than what I was trying to do for NaNoWriMo that I am eager to work on, and my gut tells me I should work on the stories that are exciting to me, and not get frustrated by stories that aren?t working. I used to feel guilty about this, but then I recalled from my numerous reading of Isaac Asimov?s autobiographies, that even late in the 1940s when Asimov was a well established writer, he would, on occasion, start a story that he just couldn?t finish. After a few tries, he?d cast it aside and move onto something else.

So, bottom line for me: I?m setting this story aside and moving onto other things, without the artificial pressure of NaNoWriMo. But I am still rooting for all of my friends who are competing, and I hope to see you cross that finish line with 50,000 words.

Jindal says GOP must get back to basics to win the White House ...

If we want people to like us, we have to like them first. ? Bobby Jindal

WASHINGTON -- Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal says the Republican Party needs to go back to basics to attract the broad coalition of voters credited with putting President Barack Obama back in the White House.

Kindergarten basics.

"If we want people to like us, we have to like them first," Jindal said on Fox News Sunday.

Former Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez has a more nuts-and-bolts approach to bringing in some of the largest and fastest growing groups of Americans: He's forming a super PAC to support Republican candidates who back comprehensive immigration reform, including legalizing the status of an estimated 11 million immigrants in the U.S. without authorization.

The 2012 elections drove home trends that have been embedded for years in the fine print of birth and death rates, immigration statistics and census charts. Nonwhites made up 28 percent of the electorate this year, compared with 20 percent in 2000, with Hispanics comprising much of that growth. Obama captured a commanding 80 percent of the growing ranks of nonwhite voters in 2012, just as he did in 2008. Republican Mitt Romney won 59 percent of non-Hispanic whites, and although he dominated among white men -- outperforming 2008 nominee John McCain among that group -- he couldn't win.

Republicans have spent much of the time since the election wrestling with ways to appeal beyond their base of white men and married women. Nonetheless, in a conference call to big donors last week, Romney credited Obama's win to "extraordinary financial gifts from government" he said the president gave groups in his base coalition: Latinos, African-Americans and young people.

Both Jindal and Gutierrez backed Romney's bid for the White House, but distanced themselves from his post-election comments.

Jindal, the incoming chair of the Republican Governors Association and a potential presidential candidate in 2016, on Sunday said slighting people simply isn't good politics.

"You don't start to like people by insulting them and saying their votes were bought. We are an aspirational party," he said.

Jindal said the Republican Party needs to convince voters it is the party of the middle class and upward mobility. Its conservative principles "are good for every single voter" and it "has to campaign for every single vote," he added.

"We also don't need to be saying stupid things," Jindal said, referring to GOP Senate candidates in Missouri and Indiana who lost their races after comments about rape that were widely criticized.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, the GOP group's incoming vice chair, said also on Fox News Sunday that governors are key to bringing a diversity of voters to the GOP. Thirty states have elected Republican governors, an indication that "the trust factor is there."

"We've got a message that works for young people, that works for people who come to our country from other countries, and, basically for anyone who wants to live their piece of the American dream," Walker said. "I think that starts with our governors as great messengers."

Gutierrez, who served under President George W. Bush, said the country cannot grow without immigrants and the Republican Party is a natural home for them.

"We are the party of prosperity, of growth, of tolerance," Gutierrez said in remarks taped Friday for CNN's "State of the Union." ''These immigrants who come across, and what they do wrong is risk their lives, and they come here and they work because they want to be part of the American dream. That is what the GOP is."

Gutierrez said he is working with Charlie Spies, who created the largest super PAC supporting Mitt Romney, Restore Our Future, on a super PAC to back candidates that support "a path, a process for legalization of workers who are here undocumented."

"First they have to be legalized," Gutierrez said. "Then you have to find a way to get into a line for the green card. ... There will be requirements. And we'll have to negotiate some sort of requirements."

Gutierrez said Republicans for Immigration Reform is about people from all over the world, including Hispanics, Asians, West Africans and Ethiopians.

"If we get this right... the 21st century is ours," Gutierrez said, referring to the GOP. "If we get it wrong, shame on us."

Workplace injury results in compensation pay-out | Personal Injury ...

Browse > Home / / Workplace injury results in c... November 17, 2012 (AmericanInjuryNews.com - Press Release)

11/15/2012 (press release: OnlinePR) // Caroline Tomlinson

A workplace accident which left a man nursing a fractured foot has resulted in a successful compensation claim, with the victim winning thousands of pounds as a result.

Whilst working alone using an overhead crane to remove a steel billet, Mr F was injured when the sling collapsed. The billet subsequently rolled on to Mr F?s right foot, which was fractured even though he was wearing safety boots at the time. Mr F then brought a successful claim for compensation and was awarded ?4,100 as a result of the inconvenience caused by his foot injury at work.

?Injuries sustained as a result of workplace accidents can have a seriously disruptive impact. Some people are left laid up and unable to work for weeks or months on end ? and some find they simply can?t work to the same ability again,? said Andrea Bartfield, Solicitor at More4ULawyers. ?It?s easy to be intimidated by the prospect of claiming compensation, but it?s vital that those who suffer injuries as a result of their employer?s negligence come forward and stand up for themselves. It?s often the only way to alert negligent employers to their own oversights.?

If you?ve been involved in an accident at work and been injured as a result, you may have grounds to make a successful claim for compensation. Likewise, it could be that stressful experiences at work ? such as bullying ? have affected your mental health, and again you could be entitled to a pay-out. To find out more about whether or not your claim for compensation is likely to succeed, arrange a consultation with More 4 U Lawyers today.

We?ll make sure that your case is dealt with in a professional and sympathetic manner, so that you get the expert advice you need. Our team has extensive experience of helping clients make successful claims for compensation, so when you choose More 4 U personal Injury Lawyers you know you?ll be in safe hands.
