Sony KDL-50EX645

When choosing an HDTV, picture quality is the most important factor, and an excess of features can't make up for a screen that's not up to snuff. Sony's EX645 series of LED-lit LCD HDTVs offer up integrated Wi-Fi and plenty of online functions, but the 50-inch KDL-50EX645 ($999 direct)?we tested suffered from some color issues and subpar black levels. Better, less-expensive options with higher picture quality abound.?

Design
The bezel is slightly rounded and nubbly, a change from the typically flat and glossy frames on Sony HDTVs. A row of physical controls sit on the right side of the screen, behind the bezel. On the back of the HDTV, an HDMI port, two USB ports, and composite video inputs face left for easy access, while three additional HDMI ports, component video inputs, and an Ethernet port face the back where they're slightly more difficult to reach. At 2.5 inches deep and 43.2 pounds, it's slightly bulky, but the set is able to be mounted on a wall.

The 7.8-inch remote is long and slim, with a comfortable, easy-to-find central navigation pad surrounded by useful buttons. The remote isn't backlit, so the distinctive pad is useful when you want to navigate menus blindly. Dedicated Sony Entertainment Network and Home buttons load most features on the HDTV, and Netflix and Internet Apps buttons below them offer even more direct access to online services.

Online Services
The 50EX640 can access a wide variety of online services through its built-in Wi-Fi or a wired Ethernet connection. The SEN (Sony Entertainment Network) button on the remote offers fast access to Sony's well-stocked movie and music libraries, and the Home menu includes services like Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Video On Demand, and YouTube. You also get a Web browser, but like with most HDTVs, ?it's a mild inconvenience to navigate the Web with the bundled remote control.

Performance
We test HDTVs with DisplayMate test patterns, SpectraCal's CalMAN software, and a Konica-Minolta CS-200 Chroma Meter. After basic brightness and contrast calibrations, the 50EX645 displayed mediocre black levels and slightly skewed colors. I measured a peak brightness of 256.20 cd/m2 (candelas per square meter)?and a black level of 0.10 cd/m2, for an underwhelming contrast ratio of 2,560:1. Mediocre black levels are typical for budget HDTVs, but the similarly priced 60-inch Vizio E601I-A3 offers a black level of 0.05 cd/m2 with the same brightness for double the contrast ratio.

Color accuracy is a mixed bag, as seen in the CIE color comparison chart below. Blues and reds are fairly close to ideal, but green is slightly cold, while flat white is slightly warm, producing some inaccurate flesh tones. This is problematic, because the 50EX645 lacks the advanced color controls found in most Samsung and LG HDTVs, like the LG 42CS560, so you can't tweak the individual channels to fix the problems.

Sony KDL-50EX645

The middling contrast ratio and disappointing black levels hurt its picture when watching very bright scenes, which don't "pop," and very dark scenes, which tend to consume shadow detail. I watched Piranha on Blu-ray, and the murky underwater shots swallowed fine details. The skewed colors threw off the bright party scenes on the lake, with the cooler greens causing the already relatively cool, slightly overcast shots to look like they were shot under fluorescent lights. Flesh tones seemed pale, and only the slightly warm flat white kept the picture from appearing completely off.

This set is a bit of a power hog for an LED-backlit HDTV. With no energy saving features enabled, it consumes 106 watts under average viewing conditions. With Energy Saving set to Low, which slightly dims the picture, that number drops to 92 watts. The picture dims too much at the highest Energy Saving setting to be comfortably watchable. This is disappointing compared with the 42-inch LG 42CS560, which consumes 80 watts with energy saving set to a level that keeps the screen suitably bright.?Worth noting: If you want to listen to music or dialog on the 50EX645?without the picture you can switch the display off while keeping sound on. The screen is best viewed at Low energy saving setting or with no power saving features, though. It still consumes less power than the Editors' Choice Samsung PN51E490B4F plasma screen and the larger LED-backlit Vizio E601I-A3, which respectively eat 150 and 118 watts.

The Sony EX645 series of HDTVs offer plenty of online options and a relatively attractive design for a decent price, but disappointing picture quality keep it from earning our recommendation. For about $300 less, you can get the Editors' Choice 3D-capable Samsung PN51E490B4F, which offers bundled 3D glasses, superior color, and better picture quality despite its limited 720p resolution. Vizio's E601I-A3, while not 3D-enabled, offers a comprehensive feature set, more accurate colors, and a bigger screen for the same $1,000.?

Why Is Homeland Playing Down The Abilities Of The CIA ...

This week I?ve been watching Homeland and The Secret State and something struck me. The CIA really are a bit rubbish.

In The Secret State we see that GCHQ, the nation?s secret service communications centre, is tapping into politician?s cellphones/mobile phones even when they are off, to listen to conversations, flagged by corporate keywords requested by American secret services. Basically the US government in the pocket of corporate America, and using leverage over Britain for commercial interests.

But in Homeland, the CIA don?t seem to be able to do that. Even though we know that they can.

Ever since Brody was accepted as a turned Al Qaeda operative by the CIA, they should have been able to tap into the microphone on his cellphone/mobile phone and listen in on his conversatios. Including a certain chat in the corridor a few episodes ago with Roya Hammad that they can only see but not hear, at the exact time they are trying to create a web of his contacts

There are two reasons. Storytelling ability. In Homeland, the CIA are the protagonists, andit?s hard to make the protagonists too powerful, because there would be no drama. If they had that conversation in the corridor tapped, they wouldn?t have to go through all the hoops necessary to target Hammad as a suspect. She would have been arrested right away and where?s the fun in that?

The other one is that you don?t want to spook the horses. The American public are okay, it seems, with terrorist suspects being stabbed in the hand as part of an interrogation. Waterboarding, torture, whatever it takes, they?ve been arrested for reason right? But tapping the phones of people, even when they?re not being used as a call, the realisation that everyone is carrying a potential bugging device or two on their person which can be listened in at any point? Even if you?re subconsciously aware, America may not like this rubbed in their face all the time

In Britain, we know what shits the secret services are. We have no freedoms, we have no rights, but on the other hand, we can have nudity and swearing on network TV, and there?s free healthcare at point of use, so you know, swings and roundabouts.

Becoming an electrician starts with getting the right schooling. One can start quite early, even in High School. Many vocational programs in secondary schools have an electrical program. Following High School graduation, one can enter a program at a college to further their learning. Community colleges often have excellent trades program, including electrical. In addition to their typical general education courses like math and English, students will take practical courses where they learn both the science behind the trade and also get to apply and learn new skills in hands-on work. If one desires to learn more about the scientific end of things, they can attend a four year college that offers advanced programs like electrical engineering or similar majors. Community colleges are great because they offer students practical experience.

One can also do some extra work on their own to increase their skills and education. It is a great idea to find an experienced individual who works in the field and get close to them. An experienced worker can offer electrician training in the form of an apprenticeship or might be able to hire a student to work for them. They can also share the pros and cons of the industry, as well as stories from on the job. This will give the young student a better idea of what daily life is like as an electrical worker, and help them decide if this is really the field that they want to devote their life to. Working with a professional can help one meet others in the field and perhaps potential future customers. The pro may also have some suggestions for training programs or courses that the aspiring electrician can take advantage of. They can serve as a reference for the student's resume.

Before one can be successful in industry, they must have to proper education and training. Fortunately, budding electrical workers have many options to help them reach their goals and better themselves.

Paula Broadwell, Army counterintelligence reservist, co-wrote general's biography

WASHINGTON - Paula Broadwell first met fellow West Point graduate David Petraeus in the spring of 2006, when she was a graduate student at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government.

He was a lieutenant general working on a counterinsurgency manual that would be tested during his command in Iraq. The university had invited him to give a speech.

Broadwell was in the Army Reserve after being recalled three times to active duty since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks to work on counterterrorism issues and intended to return to active duty or get into the policy world, according to the preface of the Petraeus biography she would later write with a Washington Post editor.

Petraeus, who held much-praised military commands in Iraq and Afghanistan, resigned Friday after admitting he had an extramarital affair, a disclosure that ended the retired four-star general's civilian career as director of the CIA.

He carried on the affair with Broadwell, now 40, according to several U.S. officials with knowledge of the situation who spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to discuss publicly the investigation that led to the resignation. The FBI discovered the relationship by monitoring Petraeus' emails, after investigators were alerted that Broadwell may have had access to his personal email account, two of the officials said.

Broadwell wrote in the preface to "All In: The Education of General David Petraeus," published by Penguin in January, that while at Harvard, Petraeus passed along his card and offered to help her academic work on leadership.

"I later discovered that he was famous for this type of mentoring and networking, especially with aspiring soldier-scholars," Broadwell wrote, adding that "I took full advantage of his open-door policy to seek insight and share perspectives."

Broadwell is a research associate at Harvard's Center for Public Leadership and a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of War Studies at King's College London, according to her biography on Penguin's website. According to the Charlotte (North Carolina) Observer, she grew up in North Dakota and moved to Charlotte more than three years ago with her husband, a radiologist, and their two young sons.

The book began as research for her dissertation, a case study of Petraeus' leadership. It evolved into an authorized biography written with Washington Post editor Vernon Loeb after President Barack Obama put Petraeus in charge of Afghanistan in 2010.

Two years earlier, she wrote in the book's preface, while visiting Washington he had invited her to join him and his team for a run along the Potomac River.

"I'd earned varsity letters in cross-country and indoor and outdoor track and finished at the top of my class for athletics at West Point; I wanted to see if he could keep stride during an interview. Instead it became a test for me," she wrote. He eventually increased the pace "until the talk turned to heavy breathing, and we reached a 6-minute-per-mile pace. It was a signature Petraeus move. I think I passed the test, but I didn't bother to transcribe the interview."

In the Army Reserve, she specialized in military intelligence, spending time at the U.S. Special Operations Command and the FBI Counterterrorism Task Forces before pursuing an academic career, according to her Penguin biography. She "lived, worked, or travelled in more than 60 countries during more than 15 years of military service and work in geopolitical analysis and counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations," her biography states.

Broadwell made multiple trips to Afghanistan, with unprecedented access to Petraeus, and also spent time with his commanders across the country.

When Petraeus left the military and took the job at the CIA, Broadwell kept in contact with him and sometimes was invited to his office for events such as his meeting with actress Angelina Jolie.

"History has yet to fully judge Petraeus' service in Iraq and Afghanistan, his impact on the U.S. military and his rank among America's wartime leaders," Broadwell wrote in the preface. "But there is no denying that he achieved a great deal during his 37-year Army career, not the least of which was regaining the strategic initiative in both wars" after Sept. 11, 2001.

"His critics fault him for ambition and self-promotion. I will note in the pages that follow that he is driven and goal-oriented, but his energy, optimism and will to win stand out more for me than the qualities seized on by his critics."

With the book done, Broadwell told friends she was returning to her dissertation, using part of her research on Petraeus to complete her doctorate.

Real Estate Wholesalers: Tarnish Your Reputation by Using This ...

crooked strategy

I was surfing through the BiggerPockets forums today and I stumbled across one discussion regarding wholesalers. ?In a nutshell, the discussion was about a flipper being brought a deal from a wholesaler where the wholesaler greatly exaggerated the key numbers (ARV and rehab cost). Not a rare encounter to read about, but it reminded me of an encounter (or should I say ?multiple encounters??) I had with a real estate wholesaler.

Unless you want to tarnish your reputation as a wholesaler, DO NOT follow this strategy. Whether or not it was done on purpose or out of?being a rookie/naive, it doesn?t matter, because both ways create the same perception: being shady.

A Real World Scenario

As I would encourage all real estate investors to do, particularly flippers/buy-and-hold investors, I believe it is a good idea to get yourself on as many buyer?s lists as you can. Whether I?m surfing Craigslist or calling ?We Buy Houes? signs, I?m always looking to get myself on buyer?s lists. It?s basic math ? the more lists I?m on, the higher the probability that I can land myself a deal.

One thing I didn?t expect was that it would expose some real?bizarre?and not well thought out business strategies. Here?s a look at several emails that show just what I?m talking about.

EMail #1

An email showed up in my inbox where the wholesaler was offering a deal for $7,500 (give or take a few hundred, I don?t remember the exact numbers as it was awhile ago). I looked through a couple pictures (note to wholesalers ? the more pictures the better!!!), and I thought there may be some profit to be had. I called up a real estate buddy and asked his thoughts (he has much more experience than me), and he told me he had checked out the property months ago and it was a disaster ? not only from a rehab perspective, but it had code violations on it from the city. The straw that broke the camel?s back . . . it wasn?t in the best part of town either.

At $7,500 it MAY have still allowed for a profit to be made; however, way too many risks to justify MAYBE getting a reward.

EMail #2

A few days go by and an email shows up from the same wholesaler. The same property is now available for $6,000. Nothing shady here. He wasn?t getting any bites at his previous price, so he lowered it. Can?t fault anyone here.

EMail #3

An email shows up a couple days later regarding the same property; however, there are two differences. First, it is from a different wholesaler. Second, it is listed at $10,000.

Ummmmm??? I don?t know this for a fact, but my logical conclusion is, Wholesaler A networks with Wholesaler B who says they will try to sell it at $10,000 so that it is a ?win-win? for the two of them (they both make the profits they want).

A friendly hint: DO NOT do this if you care about your reputation.

EMail #4

You may think I?m making this up, but this is truly how things unfolded. A week goes by, and I get another email regarding the property. We now have Wholesaler C sending out the property, and now it is listed for $15,000!!!

Who knows how this transpired, but I?m sure you are reading this thinking the same way I was: shady!

Another friendly hint: DO NOT do this if you care about your reputation

Lessons to Be Learned

There are a couple lessons to be learned for both wholesalers and other investors, although, hopefully the lesson is abundantly obvious.

Wholesalers

If you don?t want to appear as a shady character, don?t take another wholesaler?s listing and bump up the price. ESPECIALLY, if all you are going to do is email it to your buyer?s list and re-market it. There is nothing wrong with sending it to your list, but the obvious problem comes in by raising the price on what the market has already said is an overpriced piece of property.

Not only does it A) not make any sense, but even worse, B) it makes you look bad!

A solution? Tell the original wholesaler you will send it out at the same price, but it will just need to be a case of him making a bit less on the spread since he will need to split it with you. Sure, you both may not make as much, but you will be gaining/building something that is priceless ? a solid reputation among your buyer?s list.

Flippers & Buy-and-Holders

Be extra careful out there. Make sure you are not paying an over inflated price that has been marked up, and then marked up, and who knows, maybe marked up again. I suppose it could be argued that it doesn?t matter how much it is marked up if, at the end of the day, it is still a smokin? hot deal for the end buyer, but I?m a cheapskate, so I want things as cheap as I can get them!

My solution? Like I noted, get on as many buyer?s lists as you can.

To wrap up my story, out of curiosity, I emailed the original wholesaler after seeing the $15,000 price tag from Wholesaler C. I asked Wholesaler A if the property was still available at $6,000? Their answer, ?Yes, it is. Do you want to meet me there to check it out??

Funny and sad all at the same time.

Experts: 'Seatmates of size' should check ahead before flying

15 hrs.

With the holiday travel season ahead, large passengers need to carefully check airline policies before embarking in order to avoid unwelcome surprises at the gate or on the plane.

There is no overarching federal regulation guiding airlines regarding obese passengers who have difficulty fitting into a single seat, making for a hodgepodge of approaches, says Airfarewatchdog founder and consumer travel advocate George Hobica. That?s troubling, he said, because there is no question obesity is an increasing problem in this country.

That means some airlines require larger passengers to purchase two seats in advance if armrests cannot be lowered because of their size. Some airlines will attempt to find a second, extra open seat if available???at no extra cost???for the larger passenger to use;?other airlines may ask to move the passenger to another flight where there are open seats. Others may ask a larger passenger at the airport to buy another ticket at the lowest available price at the time. But if a seat isn't available, the passenger might not be able to fly.

?You would think with this growing problem???no pun intended???with the Department of Transportation?s penchant for regulations, they would somehow come up with some industry-side standards,? Hobica said. ?People are getting bigger and bigger and seats aren't getting any wider.?

Hobica?s group recently rounded up the policies of the major airlines and put it in a chart for consumers. They were surprised by the extreme lack of uniformity, he said: ?DOT should have some kind of standardized approach to protect not just those who are obese, but those who get spilled over on.?

Beyond the ability to fit into a seat and the issue of comfort, there is money at stake, he says. Some airlines that ask larger passengers to purchase a second seat if they cannot fit in a single seat will refund the?cost if it turns out there are open seats on the flight and the passenger can be accommodated. Other airlines have no such policy.

The issue of accommodating larger passengers has led to some recent high-profile publicity and lawsuits. A New Orleans woman, Kenlie Tiggeman, sued Southwest after she claims she was told when boarding a Southwest Airlines flight in 2011 that she was "too fat to fly."

Southwest's "Customer of Size" policy states that passengers who cannot fit between the 17-inch armrests must purchase a second seat.

In her lawsuit, which was dismissed in October for a technical reason (but can be reopened), Tiggeman said that she should have been told at the point of purchase that she needed to buy two seats.

In another case that garnered widespread media coverage, in February 2010, movie director Kevin Smith was asked to get off a?Southwest flight?because he allegedly couldn't fit properly into his seat.

James Zervios, director of communications for the Tampa, Fla.-based?Obesity Action Coalition --?a national advocacy organization with 40,000 members --?strongly urged larger-sized fliers to read up on their chosen airline?s policies, then print it out and bring it with them while traveling, with the relevant sections highlighted.

?This is an issue that comes up quite often,? he said. ?There is so much difference from airline to airline regarding purchasing an extra seat, for instance. If you?re going to be traveling by air, definitely contact your airline ahead of time, and ask them to show you their policy on their website. Ask them to explain it if the information is not too clear. For instance, if you are required to purchase an extra seat, will you be asked to give up (the) seat so a standby passenger can fly? If (it's) not a full flight and you have purchased an extra seat, can you ask to have it refunded??

It?s an especially important time of year to be prepared, Zervios added: ?It?s like anything else -- around the holiday season things get a little tense. So have the policy in hand and make sure you?re an informed flier.?

Obama victory a sure thing? A top Irish bookmaker thinks so.

Irish betting firm Paddy Power is so confident in an Obama win that they're paying out early to those that bet on the president's reelection. So far they've paid $650,000 to winners.

The controversial (more on that later) half-page ad in The Irish Times newspaper read: "Sorry Romney, you're not black or cool. We're paying out early on an Obama victory."

So, while Americans head to the polls to choose their next president, many people in Britain and Ireland can head to the cashier's window and pick up their winnings for choosing Obama for a second term. They won't be collecting much though, because with odds of 1/5 the firm only pays out 20 cents for every euro bet (plus gives gamblers their original stake back).

The total payout has been over $650,000, according to the betting outfit.

Anyone who fancies their chances in taking on the house and winning by betting on a Romney victory will win ?3.50 (about $4.50) for every euro staked. Despite the early payout on Obama, a Romney win would mean a second payout???and big losses for the bookie.

The low odds on Obama winning coupled with high ones on a Romney victory indicate Paddy Power is confident of a Obama victory as it is unlikely the firm would stake millions on a one-off publicity stunt.

The bookmaker is no stranger to controversial ads designed to get the attention of the press and, perhaps intentionally, rile industry regulators. In fact, Paddy Power's marketing department appears to have something of a fixation with the 44th President of the United States.

When Obama visited Ireland in May 2011 Paddy Power re-branded thirteen of its shops as "Obama Power" and took bets on which pub the president would drink a pint of Guinness in, a traditional photo-op for visiting US presidents.

More darkly, in 2008 the firm was accused of taking bets that implied Obama would be assassinated, when it offered odds that the president would not complete his term in office.

The most recent ad has attracted the attention of the Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland, standing accused of racism.

ASAI chief executive Frank Goodman said a single complaint about the ad had been lodged with the advertising industry's self-regulating body he heads.

"It's not causing widespread offense, but we're looking at it under [the rubric of] social responsibility," he said.

No one from Paddy Power was available for comment when The Christian Science Monitor called.
