Sensex recovers 103 pts in early trade; oil shares rally

DNA

The BSE benchmark Sensex on Thursday gained nearly 103 points in early trade, mainly led by a rally in stocks of oil companies on hopes of a hike in fuel prices amid firm global cues.

The 30-share barometer, which had lost 75.93 points yesterday, recovered by 102.53 points, or 0.52%, to 19,769.12 with all sector indices, led by oil and gas and PSUs, rising up to 1.24%. On the similar lines, the wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty gained 29.75 points, or 0.50%, to 6,001.25.

Brokers said fresh buying by funds amid a firming Asian trend after a overnight rally on Wall Street mainly influenced the sentiment here. Stocks of oil companies were in good demand on hopes of a hike in fuel prices that might reduce subsidy burden and improve revenues, they said. The oil and gas sector index was up by 1.24% with stocks of state-run HPCL rising 1.99%, BPCL by 2.47%, while Indian Oil Corp by 1.69%.

Meanwhile, in Asia, Japan's Nikkei was up by 0.94 per cent, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 0.91%.The US Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.46% higher on Wednesday.

Apollo Group cuts profit forecast, sign-ups slip again

(Reuters) - Apollo Group Inc , which owns the biggest U.S. for-profit college, reported lower student sign-ups for the third straight quarter and cut its operating profit forecast for 2013.

Apollo, which runs the University of Phoenix, now expects operating income of between $500 million and $550 million for the year ending August 2013, down from its prior forecast of $525 million to $575 million.

"They are going to see more cost savings than they had expected, but yet now they're expecting lower profit, so something strange is going on there," William Blair & Co analyst Brandon Dobell said.

Apollo said in October that it would cut 800 jobs and shut down 25 campuses to save costs, as fewer students signed up at its colleges.

"During the first quarter, we achieved much of our anticipated 2012 fixed cost savings -- earlier than expected," Chief Financial Officer Brian Swartz said on a post-earnings conference call on Tuesday.

General costs fell 8 percent in the first quarter.

"We now expect to realize at least two-thirds of the annual cost savings in fiscal 2013," Swartz added.

For-profit education providers have been plagued by falling enrollments over the last two years in the face of tighter regulations and low job-placement rates.

U.S. colleges were forced to focus more on the quality of education after the government introduced new rules that threatened to cut financial aid if debt loads remained high.

The company's University of Phoenix has also ramped up its spend on marketing and frozen tuition fees to tempt students to sign up.

New student enrollments fell 15 percent to 54,100 in the first quarter ended November.

CFO Swartz also said new student enrollments in December did not meet Apollo's expectations.

The company had said last year that it expected new enrollments to grow again in the second half of 2013.

Net income attributable to Apollo fell to $133.5 million from $149.3 million a year earlier.

However, the company's attributable net income per share rose to $1.18 from $1.14 as Apollo bought back some of its shares.

Excluding items, the company earned $1.22 per share.

Revenue fell 10 percent to $1.06 billion.

The company's shares were down about 6 percent after the bell. They closed down 3 percent at $20.94 on Tuesday on the Nasdaq. The stock has dropped more than 60 percent over the past year.

Jaguar cubs born at Milwaukee zoo bring new genes

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? Two jaguar cubs are providing more than just cooing fans for Milwaukee's zoo. The spotted brothers are introducing new genes to the endangered species' captive population because unlike most zoo babies, their father was born in the wild.

The blue-eyed cubs, born Nov. 13, don't officially have names just yet, but keepers at the Milwaukee County Zoo are calling them "Gaps" and "Dots," due to the markings on their heads.

Stacey Johnson, coordinator of the jaguar species survival plan for the American Zoo and Aquarium Association, said it is rare for zoos' reproductive programs to have access to animals born in the wild.

"They are bringing in a new inflow of genes that will help sustain the population over next 100 years," Johnson said.

He also noted that the cubs ? the first born at the zoo since 1975 ? are also beneficial because female jaguars currently outnumber males in zoos in North America.

The cubs, currently about the size of house cats, are still too small to navigate their multi-level exhibit, so they aren't yet on display. But fans can catch glimpses of the curious cubs and their mother on the zoo's live webcam.

Zoo officials plan to put the cubs on display by early February.

Their father, Pat, was captured in Central America after being deemed a problem jaguar for attacking cattle, so he was a bit of a celebrity at the Belize Zoo before coming to Milwaukee in 2008. The estimated 15-year-old animal also has a book named after him, "Pat the Great Cat: A Jaguars Journey," which was written by children in Milwaukee and Belize as part of a literacy program.

The cubs were the first for their mother, Stella.

The cubs will remain at the zoo for about a year before being moved to other zoos whose jaguars need genetic diversity, zoo spokeswoman Jennifer Diliberti said. Jaguars are found in the wild in the southern U.S., Mexico, Central America and South America.

The webcam has received about 16,000 hits since it went live Dec. 18. The average time spent on the webcam is about 25 minutes ? compared to 2 minutes on their home page, Diliberti said.

"People are really following their story, which is wonderful," she said.

With Funding For Svbtle, Dustin Curtis Wants To Build A Business In Long-Form Online Content

Screen Shot 2013-01-08 at 11.35.13 AMDustin Curtis is a developer, designer, and blogger who has accomplished the rare feat of getting a blogging platform off the ground. Called Svbtle, it launched in early 2012 as a sort of application-required Tumblr — a few tech thought leaders using a uniform minimalist theme to publish long posts. But it’s grown to more than 200 writers and raised an undisclosed amount of money, Curtis announced today, from early-stage investors including SV Angel, CrunchFund, and Betaworks in what appears to be a second round of funding. It had previously also raised money from angels including Y Combinator, where Curtis was an alum. What’s different about Svbtle from LiveJournal, Pownce, Vox, Posterous, if not WordPress.com or Myspace or even Twitter? Unlike the many other sites over the years that have tried to marry content management systems and social networking features, Svbtle is trying to serve professional-level writers. Instead of making money by selling ads around unlimited mixed-quality content (the Facebook model), it hopes to figure out the high-quality business, as I covered back in March. The CMS gets out of your way so you can focus on your words. There’s a pane for writing down story ideas and a simple text editor that lets you easily preview and toggle to publish. Each author gets a unique logo (Curtis’ is a lightning bolt, MG’s is a lemon), and the Svbtle theme also comes with a Liking mechanism — hold your cursor over the “Kudos” circle to the right of each article and you’ll give the author a point. It doesn’t do more at this point, but maybe he’ll make a leaderboard out of it one day. Also, there are free copy-editing and fact-checking services for all. And while the site is getting millions of pageviews in aggregate, Curtis believes the real innovation will be in monetizing high-quality content. “I just don’t know what it is yet,” he explains in the interview below. Curtis launched the site by delivering a virtuoso performance as an independent blogger. After his previous startup didn’t work out, he began writing sharply argued posts on major tech topics, along with philosophical product reviews. His personal brand — perfectionism, minimalism, intellectual superiority — has helped advertise Svbtle and has attracted lead designers, developers, investors, and bloggers who would normally be on Tumblr, WordPress, or other networks. Besides MG, there’s Dom Leca of popular email client Sparrow, digital music

Report: Syrian troops repulse rebels in Aleppo

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syria's state media said Monday that government troops repulsed a rebel attack on a police school in the northern city of Aleppo, one day after President Bashar Assad called on Syrians to fight rebels he characterized as religious extremists.

SANA news agency said members of the "terrorist group" were killed and wounded in the late Sunday battle but did not specify the number, The government and the pro-regime media refer to rebels as terrorists.

Aleppo, Syria's largest city and a former commercial hub, has been a major front in the civil war since July, with battles often raging for control of military and security facilities such as the police school. Rebels have recently made significant advances there, in the east, and in the capital Damascus, bringing the civil war closer to the seat of Assad's power.

In his speech Sunday, Assad laid out terms for a peace plan but dismissed any chance of dialogue with "murderous criminals" who he said were responsible for nearly two years of violence. Nearly 60,000 people have died, according to a recent United Nations estimate.

Assad appeared confident and relaxed in a one-hour speech ? his first public address in six months. He struck a defiant tone, ignoring international demands for him to step down and saying he is ready to hold a dialogue ? but only with those "who have not betrayed Syria." He also vowed to continue the battle "as long as there is one terrorist left."

He offered a national reconciliation conference, elections and a new constitution but demanded regional and Western countries stop funding and arming rebels trying to overthrow his regime first.

Syria's opposition swiftly rejected the proposal. Those fighting to topple the regime, including rebels on the ground, have repeatedly said they will accept nothing less than the president's departure, dismissing any kind of settlement that leaves him in the picture.

The West, including the U.S. and Britain that have called on Assad to step down denounced the speech that came amid stepped-up international efforts for a peaceful way out of the Syrian conflict.

Previous diplomatic initiatives have failed to stem the bloodshed.

Syria conflict began as peaceful protests after the uprising against Assad authoritarian rule erupted in March 2011. It morphed into civil war after a brutal government crackdown on dissent.
