Interview by Allen Cardoza and Dr. Melody Foxx

Dr. John McGrail spoke to Allen Cardoza and Dr. Melody Foxx on L.A. Talk Radio about his latest book, ?The Synthesis Effect.? The guest on the weekly Answers for the Family radio show has spent more than 30 years teaching and coaching nearly 2000 people. Dr. McGrail described ?the synthesis effect? as the fusion of hypnosis, meditation, and cognitive psychology working together to make positive change.

About Dr. John McGrail

John McGrail, PhD, is a clinical hypnotherapist. His healing strategy blends a passion for psychology and spirituality. His unique thoughts on self-improvement has been presented in magazines like Cosmopolitan, Self, and Redbook.

An Integrated Approach to Wellness

During the interview, Dr. McGrail shared a plethora of thoughts on how people can rapidly improve their lives. He offered advice about integrating physical, mental, and emotional energy. We experience imbalances when we are not eating well, sleeping properly, or adequately processing stress; when we are over identified with our ego, which is like a three year ancient child; or when we are not nurturing our spiritual energy, which is the essence of our consciousness.

Although it often seems like life is dictating to us, we are, in truth, producing it. Typically this creation takes us by surprise because it is made by the subconscious mind. In reality, 90 percent of mental phenomena emerge from the subconscious mind, with just 10 percent arising from our conscious understanding. Excellent life adjustments starts to occur when we remedy misperceptions through techniques like hypnosis and meditation and start to choose notions that provide us positive feelings rather than thoughts that ?make us feel hurt.?

Additionally, Dr. McGrail talked about how to live virtually free of suffering by working to be at cause rather than at effect. We can, if we choose, become less robotic and reactive by focusing on being more mindful, practicing present moment awareness, and spending less time regretting the past or worrying about the future.

Special Guest

Another guest on the show was international detective Logan Clarke, who reported on how the Middle Eastern crisis was causing disruption of all humanitarian efforts, which was something never covered in the traditional news media.

X-raying stellar winds in a high-speed collision

ScienceDaily (Oct. 12, 2012) ? Two massive stars racing in orbit around each other have had their colliding stellar winds X-rayed for the first time, thanks to the combined efforts of ESA's XMM-Newton and NASA's Swift space telescopes.

Stellar winds, pushed away from a massive star's surface by its intense light, can have a profound influence on their environment.

In some locations, they may trigger the collapse of surrounding clouds of gas and dust to form new stars.

In others, they may blast the clouds away before they have the chance to get started.

Now, XMM-Newton and Swift have found a 'Rosetta stone' for such winds in a binary system known as Cyg OB2 #9, located in the Cygnus star-forming region, where the winds from two massive stars orbiting around each other collide at high speeds.

Cyg OB2 #9 remained a puzzle for many years. Its peculiar radio emission could only be explained if the object was not a single star but two, a hypothesis that was confirmed in 2008.

At the time of the discovery, however, there was no direct evidence for the winds from the two stars colliding, even though the X-ray signature of such a phenomenon was expected.

This signature could only be found by tracking the stars as they neared the closest point on their 2.4-year orbit around each other, an opportunity that presented itself between June and July 2011.

As the space telescopes looked on, the fierce stellar winds slammed together at speeds of several million kilometres per hour, generating hot plasma at a million degrees which then shone brightly in X-rays.

The telescopes recorded a four-fold increase in energy compared with the normal X-ray emission seen when the stars were further apart on their elliptical orbit.

"This is the first time that we have found clear evidence for colliding winds in this system," says Yael Naz? of the Universit? de Li?ge, Belgium, and lead author of the paper describing the results reported in Astronomy & Astrophysics.

"We only have a few other examples of winds in binary systems crashing together, but this one example can really be considered an archetype for this phenomenon."

Unlike the handful of other colliding wind systems, the style of the collision in Cyg OB2 #9 remains the same throughout the stars' orbit, despite the increase in intensity as the two winds meet.

"In other examples the collision is turbulent; the winds of one star might crash onto the other when they are at their closest, causing a sudden drop in X-ray emission," says Dr Naz?.

"But in the Cyg OB2 #9 system there is no such observation, so we can consider it the first 'simple' example that has been discovered -- that really is the key to developing better models to help understand the characteristics of these powerful stellar winds. "

"This particular binary system represents an important stepping stone in our understanding of stellar wind collisions and their associated emissions, and could only be achieved by tracking the two stars orbiting around each other with X-ray telescopes," adds ESA's XMM-Newton project scientist Norbert Schartel.

Jesse Jackson Jr. faces federal investigation

Charles Rex Arbogast / AP

Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. in 2011.

By Michael Isikoff, NBC News national investigative correspondent

Federal prosecutors and FBI agents in Washington have launched a new criminal investigation of Illinois Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. involving alleged financial improprieties, including possible misuse of funds monitored by Congress, law enforcement sources tell NBC News.

The probe prompted lawyers for Jackson ??who has been on a leave of absence from Congress since June for medical treatment ??to meet with federal prosecutors this week in an attempt to persuade them not to bring charges against the congressman, sources said.

The sources said it was unclear whether Jackson, who has not been seen in his office for months, would be charged before the November election ??a subject that was discussed between Jackson?s lawyers and the prosecutors this week. Jackson?s lawyers urged the prosecutors not to file charges before the election ? but prosecutors refused to make any commitments, the sources familiar with the meeting said.

Either way, the new investigation could ratchet up pressure for Jackson to step aside. Despite his illness ??which his office has said involves his treatment for bipolar disorder ??Jackson is running for re-election, seeking a 10th term. His lawyers did not return email and phone call request for comment.

Frank Watkins, Jackson?s congressional spokesman,?says he has not reached out Jackson and has not spoken to him about the investigation, and that the first he heard of the investigation was when he was contacted by the Chicago Sun Times, which first reported the story. He said he believes Jackson is still in DC.

View NBCChicago.com's complete coverage of?Jackson?investigation

The sources, confirming the ?account in the Sun-Times, said the new probe is being run out of the U.S. attorney's office in Washington DC. They said it is unrelated to previous allegations that Jackson was part of a scheme to persuade ex-Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich? to name him to the Illinois Senate seat of Barack Obama in exchange for $1 million in campaign contributions from a top fundraiser.

The sources did not specify the financial irregularities being investigated. But the Sun-Times said the case involves misuse of funds or an account monitored by Congress. ?It comes weeks after a report that Jackson and his wife, Chicago alderwoman Sandi Jackson, put their Washington DC home on the market for $2.5 million. A campaign spokesman said at first the home was put on the market to pay for medical bills, but the Jackson later took it off the market.?

Jackson, the son of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson Sr.,?stopped working June 10, his staffers revealed two weeks later. He first obtained treatment at a facility in Arizona before transferring to the famed Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where doctors said he had "depression and gastrointestinal issues."

He left the Mayo Clinic and went back to Washington, D.C. in early September but has not returned to work.?

New studies could result in better treatments for epilepsy, behavioral disorders

ScienceDaily (Oct. 11, 2012) ? Three studies conducted as part of Wayne State University's Systems Biology of Epilepsy Project (SBEP) could result in new types of treatment for the disease and, as a bonus, for behavioral disorders as well.

The SBEP started out with funds from the President's Research Enhancement Fund and spanned neurology, neuroscience, genetics and computational biology. It since has been supported by multiple National Institutes of Health-funded grants aimed at identifying the underlying causes of epilepsy, and it is uniquely integrated within the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at the Wayne State School of Medicine and the Detroit Medical Center.

Under the guidance of Jeffrey Loeb, M.D., Ph.D., associate director of the Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics (CMMG) and professor of neurology, the project brings together researchers from different fields to create an interdisciplinary research program that targets the complex disease. The multifaceted program at Wayne State is like no other in the world, officials say, with two primary goals: improving clinical care and creating novel strategies for diagnosis and treatment of patients with epilepsy.

The three studies were published in high-impact journals and use human brain tissue research to identify new targets for drug development, generate a new animal model and identify a new class of drugs to treat the disease. In the first study, "Layer-Specific CREB Target Gene Induction in Human Neocortical Epilepsy," published recently in the Journal of Neuroscience, donated human brain samples were probed to identify 137 genes strongly associated with epileptic seizures.

Researchers then showed that the most common pathway is activated in very specific layers of the cortex, and that it's associated with increased numbers of synapses in those areas. Because epilepsy is a disease of abnormal neuronal synchrony, the finding could explain why some brain regions produce clinical seizures.

"Higher density of synapses may explain how abnormal epileptic discharges, or spikes, are formed, and in what layer," Loeb said, adding that localizing the exact layer of the brain in which that process occurs is useful both for understanding the mechanism and for developing therapeutics.

The first study, which identified a new drug target for epilepsy, precipitated a second study that has found such a drug.

In the second study, "Electrical, Molecular and Behavioral Effects of Interictal Spiking in the Rat," published recently in Neurobiology of Disease, SBEP researchers found that the same brain layers in the rat are activated as in the human tissues and searched for a drug to target those layers. In fact, the first drug they tried, a compound called SL327 that has been used in nonhuman subjects to understand how memory works, "worked like a dream," Loeb said. "SL327 prevented spiking in rat brains," he said, "which not only prevented seizures, but led to more normal behaviors as well."

That finding led to collaborations between Loeb's lab and Nash Boutros, M.D., professor of psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences, and the Belgian drug company UCB.

"Whereas animals that developed epileptic spiking became hyperactive, those treated with the drug and had less spiking in their brains were more like normal animals," Loeb said. "Now whenever we screen for drugs for epilepsy, we look at behavior as well as epileptic activity."

Noting that many seizure medicines currently are used to treat various psychiatric disorders, Loeb said the SBEP team's latest round of work marks a "nice crossover" between psychiatry and neurology in the field of drugs related to epilepsy.

In the third study, just published in Genetics, researchers say they have found "fascinating interrelationships" between "junk" long noncoding RNA and normal RNA that are regulated by human brain activity. That work has the potential to be translated into new genetic treatments for epilepsy.

"This study shows how the human brain deals with half of the human genome in its most important function, electrical activity, using human brain tissue from patients with epilepsy to understand the basic molecular processes of how the brain works, and what's unique about human brains compared to the brains of less-developed species," Loeb said.

The third study, titled "Activity-Dependent Human Brain Coding/Noncoding Gene Regulatory Networks," is a collaborative effort between Loeb's lab and Leonard Lipovich, Ph.D., assistant professor of neurology and molecular medicine and genetics. It found that certain genes and their noncoding counterparts (which some researchers have called "junk") are co-regulated, or turned on at the same time, with brain activity.

"This tells us that some of these noncoding genes may actually have functions in brain activity," Loeb said. "In some, turning one on turns another one off. Some are regulatory and can be used to control plasticity genes -- which are involved in memory, learning and behavior -- with one of these novel, noncoding RNA genes."

The synergy exhibited by the three studies, Loeb said, is testimony to the multidisciplinary nature of Wayne State's systems biology platform, partly developed with a remarkable three-dimensional database created in cooperation with Farshad Fotouhi, Ph.D., dean of the College of Engineering, and Jing Hua, Ph.D., associate professor of computer science.

"SBEP is a cross-campus endeavor," Loeb said. "These studies are the fruits of the labor of this consortium and only exist at WSU. The next steps will be translating these exciting findings into new treatments to prevent or even cure patients with epilepsy and other psychiatric disorders."

With wife expecting, Stephan Bonnar ready to jump on private jet after UFC 153

Though Stephan Bonnar has UFC 153 and Anderson Silva on his mind, he has another concern when he's in Brazil this week. Bonnar's wife Andrea is pregnant and due at the end of the month. Since babies are born on their own schedule and not the UFC's, Bonnar has a contingency plan ready to go for the event Andrea goes into labor earlier than expected.

According to Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole, UFC president Dana White has offered to fly Bonnar back to his home in Las Vegas immediately after the fight with Silva in his private jet.

Bonnar took White up on his offer, but the Bonnars still have another plan in place, according to TMZ.

Andrea says Stephan?plans to video conference in to his wife's birth if he can't make it in time -- but she adds, "We're trying to avoid even thinking about that."

Their son's birth will be forever connected to Bonnar's last-minute fight with Silva. After featherweight champion Jose Aldo's injury threatened UFC 153, Bonnar stepped up to fight Silva, the middleweight champion and pound-for-pound king at light heavyweight.

There is a chance their son will be connected to Bonnar's most famous fight, as well. As Iole also mentioned, Stephan and Andrea are considering naming their son Griffin Bonnar in honor of the Bonnar-Forrest Griffin bout at the first "Ultimate Fighter" finale.

Techniques for Using Art in Science

There are many different ways to help children translate what they have learned about a science concept into abstract and artistic representation. This is an important skill because it not only allows children to apply what they have learned (and to demonstrate their understanding) but it also invites children to move to higher levels of thinking. During what Jean Piaget defined as the Pre-Operational Stage (usually from 2-6years) children are on a ?search for representation? and their major task is to master symbolic and representational function.

Some suggestions for artistic and scientific abstract representation:

? Field Drawings: When children observe both in the science center or classroom or outside, invite them to ?record? their observations with drawings. It really doesn?t matter if their drawings look anything like what they see. Have drawing paper near your microscope or magnifiers. Always take sketchpads outside for playtime. You never know when an amazing discovery will occur.

? Prediction/Results Charts: Before testing out a concept such as ice and melting ask children to make predictions about what they think will happen. What is the best place for ice to melt fast? What will happen when you paint on frozen paper?? Record these on chart paper with words and drawings. Add the results at the end of the activity and discuss the findings.

? Graphs: Simple graphs made with objects or pictorial representations are essential for demonstrating information in an abstract format.? After a rust experiment children can paste in 2 parallel columns the objects that rusted and those that did not.

? Field Photos: Children can be amazingly adept at using cameras if they are shown correct handling and use.? Use disposable or even digital cameras for children to record their observation and experimentation.

? Audio Field Notes: Of course, recordings don?t have to all be made on paper.? Show children how to use a simple handheld tape recorder to record their observations on a walk or in the classroom.

? Science Journals: Provide small notebooks for children to keep their field drawings, photos, and writing.

Make 9x12 size copies of the class charts and graphs in order for children to share their work with families.? The science journal is an excellent way for families to talk ?science? with their child. You might want to include a note to parents with a summary of the science project and some questions they can ask to help them discuss the work in the journal.

? Measurement Charts: Science often involves measurement. When children are measuring the growth of a moong seed sprout or the rising of bread dough. Use graph paper, strings, ice cream sticks, or adding machine tape to record their measurements and paste these in a row across a recording chart. Children will be able to ?read? their findings by reading the pictures!

Taiwan asking Apple to blur satellite image

(AP) ? Taiwan is asking Apple Inc. to blur a map image of its new $1.4 billion early warning radar station that can detect aircraft and missiles coming from as far as western China.

Defense Ministry spokesman David Lo said Tuesday that Apple should follow its rival Google in using only low-resolution satellite pictures to show sensitive facilities. He acknowledged the military should also try to camouflage them.

The 10-story high radar installation built with U.S. technology is expected to go online later this year. It's near the Hsinchu Air Base in northern Taiwan.

The satellite picture that can be viewed with iPhones is believed to have been taken a year ago.

Local media say the radar installation can monitor targets, determine their speeds and fire missiles to intercept them.
