Video nasty: one man's ordeal and society's mixed messages on porn

"What was jail like?'' Darrell Cohen stares at me, and then his face scrunches up. His head slumps into his hands and he begins, wordlessly, to sob.

Few people know that, throughout the states of Australia, retailing X-rated pornography remains illegal. You can own the stuff, you can buy it, but you are not allowed to sell it.

The National Classification Code - which governs the censorship of literature, film, TV and video games - reflects a heated battle over video pornography in the 1980s.

Australians were early enthusiasts for the VCR revolution, a boom that historians of technology attribute largely to porn. The early machines were expensive - but they meant you could watch hard-core videos in the privacy of your lounge room.

In response to the suddenly flourishing market of VCR porn, the federal government introduced the X category. But anti-porn activists, both social conservatives and feminists, convinced the state governments not to ratify corresponding schemes in their own jurisdictions.

Since then, the laws have remained largely frozen, a strange and unsatisfactory?compromise that leaves the adult industry in a weird limbo.

In theory, the sex shops in Melbourne and Sydney are illegal. But illegality assists a peculiar freedom - most of the time.

You can't survive as an adult retailer without selling DVDs that are X-rated (that is, show actual sex). But if you are breaking the law merely by trading, there's not much incentive to follow other classification rules.

The X category comes hedged with all kinds of strange historical baggage. Certain fetishes - bondage, candle wax, etc - are explicitly forbidden, sufficient to send a film into the refused-classification pile. Furthermore, a film rated X for sexual content cannot contain violence. Not just sexual violence but any violence, even if entirely unrelated to sex. A sword fight, for example, in a porn movie about pirates would mean the DVD must be refused classification - in other words, banned.

Yet, because the adult shops are already outside the law, they simply ignore such distinctions. Often, none of their stock has been classified. If selling X is already illegal, there's no reason not to sell something that has been banned as well.

The police, understandably, turn a blind eye. Or mostly.

Darrell Cohen was the manager of an Oxford Street sex shop. He has just been released after months in prison, convicted of selling unclassified DVDs - most of which were later classified as X and six of which were refused classification.

We organise to meet in a pub in Broadway. He nominates a table in the beer garden out the back because the passing trucks would mean shouting out the front, and it is a conversation he does not want anyone to overhear. He is a soft, slightly rumpled man, resembling a less-dissolute Christopher Hitchens, with plump features that seem vaguely uncomprehending, like a child who has been punished for reasons he doesn't grasp.

Cohen had been a riding instructor, he says, and because that seems such an unlikely precursor to selling explicit DVDs, I wonder for a second whether he is using some kind of euphemism. A riding instructor: does that mean a gigolo? A bondage master, maybe?

''You know,'' he says, seeing my confusion. ''Horses.''

But then he ventured into an Oxford Street shop called Urge and responded to an ad he found there.

''I didn't mind it,'' he says of his new job, a little defensively. ''It's not what people expect - a bit full-on, maybe, but I enjoyed it.

''We were open 24 hours a day. It was a gay store, a straight store; we sold everything. Same sort of stuff as all the other shops were selling. That's why I didn't think I was doing anything wrong.

''There were another seven shops in Oxford Street selling exactly the same product I was.''

I ask if he knew about the classification codes.

''Yes,'' he says, hesitating before continuing, ''but it was just like an open thing, you know? Yes, it's illegal but no one gets busted, or if they do, it's just a fine. I mean, it's just like jaywalking: it's illegal but people do it.

''And then when I found out there was jail time I thought, 'You're joking. You're just trying to scare me.'

''Everybody was telling me, 'They're just trying to scare you. There's not going to be jail time. Don't be stupid, you don't have a record. Commonsense is going to prevail.' But it didn't.''

Was there any official explanation as to why he had been targeted?

''No! Nothing!'' he says. ''And I asked the police when they were raiding me, 'Why this shop? Why no one else?'

''The younger policeman said, 'Oh, we don't have enough resources,' and an older policeman butted in and said, 'Oh, we're doing them.' But still nothing's been done. So I don't understand.''

When I ask if the police were aggressive and if he was scared, he gives a weak grin.

''I was scared,'' he says, ''but only because I'm a scaredy-cat.''

The phrase, perhaps even more than his sentence, makes my heart go out to him. He seems unbearably naive - the most unworldly pornographer imaginable.

Then he starts sobbing and I don't know what to do, feeling I should offer some comfort for the distress I've unwittingly brought about, but conscious that I met the man only minutes earlier and am unable to think what to say. ''Sorry,'' he mutters. ''It's just ? difficult.''

I ask if he wants to pause. Should I turn off my recorder?

He waves the offer away. ''I didn't really cope well in prison,'' he says, a statement that now seems superfluous.

''The last day of my sentence,?I said to them, 'Am I going home?' And you know where they took me?''

I shake my head.

''They took me to the psych ward because I'd had such a hard time.''

Once more, he starts to cry.

The very availability of X-rated DVDs - the fact that shops were selling them all over the city - made Cohen's time in jail more dangerous, since no one there believed he'd been convicted simply for selling adult porn.

''When I went in, they asked what my crime was. I told them and they said, 'Was it paedophilia?' All of the officers, that was the first thing they asked. I told one of the other inmates and he just said, 'Listen, I wouldn't be telling other inmates about that because they're not going to believe you.' And so I tried to hide it ?

''I didn't know anyone and I didn't want to talk to the professional criminals about drugs and the rest of it. I just tried to keep to myself. But they know when you are having a hard time - and they go after you. You stand in line, you get pushed. The vulnerable person, that's the person they're going to go after. That was me.

''My cell mate, once he realised that I was not a person who was going to fight back, well, then it was on. I had 11 weeks of it - every night, every night. What do you do? You can't complain because they'll just send you to another cell, and all the prisoners know each other. It doesn't matter where you go.''

I mumble something about applying for special protection.

He nods, a picture of misery.

''Yes, I put myself into protection, but that means you're with the rapists and the murderers,'' he says.

''I was on suicide watch in Parklea and then I got moved to Kirkconnell, which was minimum security, but I didn't cope there very well, so they put me back on suicide watch.

''In the last weeks, I applied for segregation because I couldn't cope with being around people. I couldn't ring my friends up because I would get so upset on the phone, so I didn't have any phone calls. I didn't want to be strip-searched when I had a visitor, so in the end I told them not to visit me.''

The conversation dries up after that, not because I've learnt all I want to know but because pressing him further seems cruel.

In any case, he doesn't seem to understand very much about the details of his court case. It's almost as if he hadn't been following.

We sit in awkward silence until I say: ''Well, I think we're pretty much done.''

''Are you sure?''

''Yes, it's fine.''

I thank him again and he shakes my hand, pressing his wet palm against mine. Then he wipes his eyes, stands up, and leaves the pub. I watch him walk away, but make no move to go.

The encounter has left me wrung out, much more than I expected. I decide I need another drink.

Afterwards, I am still pondering what exactly has happened, why Cohen had been singled out so harshly.

It is only much later, when I read a copy of his court transcript, that I understand.

He'd received a custodial sentence because the authorities weren't convinced he was telling the truth about his relationship to the business. They thought, it seemed, he was covering for someone else, protecting a person whom he refused to name.

In a stammering performance in the witness box (even from the transcript I could tell he'd seemed evasive and shifty), he'd acknowledged that he wasn't the real business owner but flatly refused to say who was. The strong suggestion throughout the hearing was that the shop belonged to a major porn kingpin.

A fine was deemed inappropriate because Cohen earned so little money that he had no chance of repaying a monetary penalty - unless his mysterious patron stepped in, which would defeat the purpose of the punishment.

A jail term, on the other hand, was meant to send a warning that no one could use a stand-in to circumvent the law: a message to the frontmen that they would be held responsible for their actions. Which was all very well, but if Cohen's boss really was a leading player in the Sydney underground, well, it is no wonder Cohen didn't want to turn him in.

He mightn't have been exactly street-savvy, but he presumably recognised the danger of obtaining a reputation as an informer. Such were the consequences of the strange grey economy around porn. If adult businesses were illegal, they would inevitably become a focus for criminals.

The notion that jailing Cohen would ensure the law wasn't broken seems patently ludicrous, given how systematically it is breached every day. I could buy the DVDs for which he'd been charged in shops throughout Australia. More to the point, I could download them, almost instantly, from the internet - most likely without even paying.

The Cohen case leaves me more convinced than ever of the need for a new conversation about pornography and classification.

The old models of censorship are simply no longer adequate.

You can go to prison for selling a DVD showing consensual bondage. Yet on every train carriage there's someone unabashedly engrossed in a copy of Fifty Shades of Grey. How does that make sense?

In an era in which an erotic bondage novel is Amazon's biggest-selling book ever, it's way past time for a new approach to porn - an approach that begins by acknowledging that adult content is now part of the culture.

There are all sorts of things wrong with the porn industry: most obviously its deep misogyny but also its profound and usually unacknowledged racism.

But the Australian censorship regime provides no answer. In the age of the internet, pornography inevitably circulates. It seems far more sensible to recognise reality - to start talking openly about what porn contains and how we might respond to it - than to pretend bans will work.

While we prevaricate, our weird patchwork of censorship laws will be routinely flouted - and insofar as they're not, they'll bear down on the powerless, not the powerful.

It's worth noting that Australia's strictest anti-porn laws apply exclusively in indigenous areas of the Northern Territory and some of the laxest laws govern Canberra, the nation's capital.

In Sydney, Darrell Cohen's life has been torn asunder. The next time I speak to him, he is unemployed and living in his van, not doing anything much other than recovering from jail. How is anyone safer as a result of that?

Jeff Sparrow is the author of the new book Money Shot: A Journey into Porn and Censorship, from which much of this material is taken.

Information bits from the news

As Earth orbits the sun, it exerts a gravitational pull that makes the sun ?wobble? to and fro at a rate of up to nine centimeters per second. This so-called radial velocity variation is what astronomers often measure to find exoplanets. Yet their instruments are only sensitive enough to turn up large exoplanets?some of them many times more massive than Jupiter?that can exert a tug of more than one meter per second. A group of researchers at Germany's Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics has developed a calibration technique using a device called a laser-frequency comb to make radial velocity searches more sensitive. It will make it easier to find smaller, potentially Earth-like planets that may be hospitable to life.

My personal Brand-new Home-internet Enterprise Refreshing Hope ...

I?m Andy. My home is in great britain, inside the Northern Western side around the edge of Britain. We are a common loved ones man using a wonderful wife along with three lovely little ones. Close to A month ago I started my very own on the internet home business. Ahead of that I had no idea you could make money online aside from by means of marketing stuff you wouldn?t like on amazon or ebay. I had arrived at the point within my occupation wherever I was discovering it difficult to progress, was not producing ample funds to pay our bills, has been spending a long time abroad, trying to provide an issue that I didn?t rely on myself personally in order to consumers who failed to want to buy!. I needed regarded as creating my very own company previously but did not really believe this type of venture harmonized our knowledge, was lacking the main city for this, and yes it has been almost all a little too a danger. Then I a brainwave a hunt for earn money online? opened up a new realm of choices, as well as abruptly our entire attitude transformed there would be a arena of chance on the market for somebody like me to start right now there individual online business!Truth is, operating an online business just isn?t for all. To me I believe it is. In my everyday work I love the periods while i home based and still have zero phone calls to create. Some people love the buzz? of the place of work and require men and women around these people. I?d personally a lot prefer to turn off the actual cell phones and work with the spread sheet all day long, invest some time together with my children at night after which probably join one among my pals down the tavern. This is ample for me a straightforward dude as the primary goal, as well as running a home-business would seem to accommodate someone much like me.However a thing regarding warning it?s hard money, you can find strategies in order to achievement, however you inevitably must pay for the kids plus they are normally short-term. 2 new owls discovered in the Philippines

Friday, August 17, 2012

Two new species of owls have been discovered in the Philippines, and a Michigan State University researcher played a key role in confirming their existence.

The discovery, which is featured in the current issue of Forktail, the Journal of Asian Ornithology, took years to confirm, but it was well worth the effort, said the paper's lead author Pam Rasmussen, MSU assistant professor of zoology and assistant curator of mammalogy and ornithology at the MSU Museum.

"More than 15 years ago, we realized that new subspecies of Ninox hawk-owls existed in the Philippines," she said. "But it wasn't until last year that we obtained enough recordings that we could confirm that they were not just subspecies, but two new species of owls."

Announcing the finding of a single bird is rare enough. But the discovery of two new bird species in a single paper is so rare that Rasmussen and the other researchers couldn't recall the last time it happened.

The first owl, the Camiguin Hawk-owl, is found only on the small island of Camiguin Sur, close to northern Mindanao. Despite being so close geographically to related owls on Mindanao, it has quite different physical characteristics and voice. At night, it gives a long solo song that builds in intensity, with a distinctive low growling tone. Pairs of owls give short barking duets that start with a growl. They also are the only owls to have blue-gray eyes.

The second new discovery was the Cebu Hawk-owl. This bird was thought to be extinct, as the forests of Cebu have almost all been lost due to deforestation. But it had never been considered a distinct form. Study of its structure and vocalizations confirmed that it was a new species. In fact, it was the unique calling or vocalizations of both owls that confirmed that the new classifications were warranted.

"The owls don't learn their songs, which are genetically programmed in their DNA and are used to attract mates or defend their territory; so if they're very different, they must be new species," Rasmussen said. "When we first heard the songs of both owls, we were amazed because they were so distinctly different that we realized they were new species."

The owls have avoided recognition as distinct species for so long because the group shows complex variation in appearance that had been poorly studied, and their songs were unknown. Both islands are off the beaten path for ornithologists and birders, who usually visit the larger islands that host more bird species.

Sound recordings of both new owl species and those from other islands are available free on AVoCet.

Since the discovery process is both tedious and time consuming, it took a team of scientists and contributors to confirm the owls' existence. The team included individuals from BirdLife International, the Oriental Bird Club, Philippines Biodiversity Conservation Foundation Inc. and Birdtour Asia. Additional support was provided by National Geographic.

Floating robot helps track great white sharks

OSLO | Fri Aug 17, 2012 8:51am EDT

OSLO

(Reuters) - A floating robot has been deployed to track great white sharks in the Pacific as part of efforts to understand the giant predators.

The "wave glider", which from above looks like a yellow surfboard, picks up signals from tagged fish up to 1,000 feet away in the ocean and then sends their positions to researchers via a satellite transmitter.

Scientists have only a hazy understanding of where great white sharks, portrayed as ferocious killers in films like "Jaws", swim in the oceans. The new robot will give insights into their movements.

"Here we are in the 21st century and scientists have just put a rover on Mars. And we don't understand what is going on in the oceans," said Barbara Block, a marine sciences professor at Stanford University in California in charge of the project.

"We will send a wave glider out to follow the sharks," she told Reuters. In one eight-day test, the glider, made by California-based Liquid Robotics and which moves at less than walking speed, made 200 detections of 19 individual sharks.

The glider, about 7 feet long with solar panels above and a wave-power system below, could also give clues to other tagged creatures ranging from mako sharks to tuna and salmon.

It can only notice creatures that have been previously tagged by scientists with tiny battery-powered acoustic transmitters that bleep once every two minutes. Thousands of creatures carry the tags, Block said.

The glider, and listening buoys in fixed positions chained to the seabed, are building on a previous project for the tagging of Pacific predators, which was part of an international census of marine life from 2000-10.

Block said that scientists already knew that great white sharks wandered across the Pacific from North America, often all the way to Hawaii.

There were also mysterious gatherings, including in one mid-ocean area dubbed the "white shark cafe". Unlike the fixed buoys, the gliders can monitor such "ocean wi-fi hotspots".

The researchers are setting up an app, "Shark Net" allowing people to track the fish.

Block hopes to extend the ocean observing network down the west coast of the United States, likening the region to a "blue Serengeti" as rich in wildlife as Tanzania or Kenya.
