What Sounds Can Cause You to Fail a Hearing Test?

Sounds are not all good for you and some, with prolonged exposure, can be the cause of a failed hearing test. Many people struggle with the loss of the ability to hear. This happens for many reasons, including just getting older. However, more often than not, prolonged exposure to noise or very loud sounds infrequently can cause the damage to the inner ear that can be lasting. If you have failed such a screening and are wondering why this happened to you, it pays to talk to your audiologist about it and what you can do about it. There is help available. It starts with understanding your risks.

Some Sounds Are Okay

Some types of sounds do not damage the ears in any way. These will not lead to any damage seen on a hearing test. For example, a very soft sound, like that of a whisper, has about 30 decibels of sound. Normal conversation is also okay as it has about 60 decibels of sound. If you were to stand next to the average washing machine, that comes in at about 70 decibels and it is still within the normal range where there is no risk present.

Moderate Risk

Anything more than 80 decibels is worrisome because even irregular sounds at this level can begin to cause damage to the inner ear. At the lowest end of this spectrum is the sound of a lawn mower, a hair dryer or heavy traffic. These sounds range from 85 to 90 decibels and while they do not cause instant damage to the ears, they do wear down on your ability to hear over a period of time. Prolonged exposure on an ongoing basis will cause damage here. A motorcycle, with 95 decibels of sound, a snowmobile, with 100 decibels of sound, and a chain saw, with 110 decibels of sound are all too high for regular use.

Very High Sound

Some sounds are classified as high risk or in the injury range. This means that just hearing this sound one time can do permanent damage to your ears if you are close enough to it. For example, an ambulance siren next to the ear is too high because it has about 120 decibels of sound. A jet engine taking off has about 140 decibels of sound. That is also the pain threshold, which means that at this level it is going to be painful.

As you can see, sounds play an important role in your ability to hear. They can also cause you to have a failed hearing test if you are listening to those sounds for good long.

Maryland ushers in New Year with its first gay marriages

BALTIMORE (Reuters) - Seven gay couples in Maryland rang in the New Year with wedding bells early Tuesday, the first wave of nuptials since voters in the state backed the legalization of same-sex marriage.

The couples were "lawfully married" rather than pronounced "husband and wife" at the 12:30 a.m. (0530 GMT) ceremony on New Year's Day in Baltimore's City Hall.

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake officiated at the wedding of the first of the couples, 68-year-old James Scales and 60-year-old William Tasker. Scales and Tasker said they had been together for 35 years.

The mayor joked that everyone had come to celebrate a relationship that began many years ago - "and I mean that, many years ago."

Soon after the November vote legalizing gay marriage, Scales, a long-time city employee, asked the mayor to marry the two.

"She wanted to make a statement to tell gay, lesbian, transgendered couples that they're welcome here," said the mayor's press secretary Ian Brennan of her decision.

Voters in Maryland, Maine and Washington state approved same-sex unions on Election Day, becoming the only states to pass such a measure by popular vote.

Nine of the 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C., now have legalized gay marriage. Another 31 states have passed constitutional amendments banning it.

Rawlings-Blake called the November 6 vote "a remarkable achievement for Maryland" and welcomed friends and families of the couples to witness history at the early morning ceremony.

"We are excited to open City Hall to host some of the first wedding ceremonies in our great state," Rawlings-Blake said.

Public opinion has been shifting in favor of allowing same-sex marriage. A Pew Research Center survey from October found 49 percent of Americans favored allowing gay marriage, with 40 percent opposed. In May, President Barack Obama became the first U.S. president to say he believed same-sex couples should be allowed to get married.

The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to review two challenges to federal and state laws that define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

The nation's highest court said this month it will review a case against a federal law that denies married same-sex couples the federal benefits that heterosexual couples receive.

It also will look at a challenge to California's ban on gay marriage, known as Proposition 8, which voters narrowly approved in 2008.

Washington state's law legalizing same-sex unions took effect on December 9 and Maine's on December 29.

Here's One Twisted Way To Advertise Cremations - Business Insider

There's no easy way to advertise cremation services.

So Australia's Just Cremations decided to go for broke with this jaw dropping promotion:?

BuzzFeed's Copyranter noted that this isn't Just Cremations' first odd ad. A Redditor posted this visual that Just Cremations placed on the back of the bus. Its message isn't as self explanatory.

2013 Screenwriting Challenge | Write Your Screenplay

Begin Your New Year WRITE!

With My 5th Annual

2013 SCREENWRITING CHALLENGE

Why The Challenge?

Let?s face it, the holidays are a brutal time for writers.

We all do our best writing when we get into a rhythm. But during the holiday season that rhythm can be impossible to maintain. Schedules get jammed with Christmas parties, gifts to buy, family visits and a little too much vacation time and the next thing you know you haven?t written for a month.

But that?s not the real problem. The real problem is starting up again.

Ideally, writing would be part of your daily routine. As natural as brushing your teeth, getting dressed for work, or drinking your morning coffee.

But for most writers this is rarely the case. Many of us write in fits and starts, waiting desperately for moments of inspiration, and spending most of our time beating ourselves up when that inspiration doesn?t come. And then, just when we get started on a rhythm, something happens to interrupt it.

I?m always amused when I participate in writing panels. Invariably, an eager young student asks a question about building a life as a writer. ?What real writers do is write? insists one panel member after another, striving to out do each other as they speak of their unceasing dedication to their craft.

Having worked with writers for most of my professional life, I know the truth. It doesn?t matter if you?re an Academy Award Winner or a first time writer. Most of what writers do is NOT writing.

What writers really do is PROCRASTINATE.

Writers are brilliant at finding ?important? tasks to interfere with their writing. Set aside a couple hours to write, and suddenly those dirty dishes start to call to you. The next thing you know you?ve cleaned your whole kitchen, scrubbed your shower tiles to a sparkling shine, reorganized your closet, updated your facebook photos, and still not written a single word.

You?re furious at yourself. But at the same time, a part of you feels like you didn?t have a choice. Time just got away from you. ?I?ll write for twice as long tomorrow,? you reassure yourself. But tomorrow comes and four hours seems like an impossible amount of time. Even if you do manage to bang out a few pages, it?s impossible to derive any joy from them. And the next thing you know, you?ve gone a whole week, month, or even year without writing.

Under these circumstances it?s easy to doubt if you?re really a writer at all. You may even be tempted to give up on writing entirely. You feel so blocked that you don?t see any way out. But at the same time you know that giving up on writing would be giving up on the best part of yourself. So what are you supposed to do?

The difference between successful and unsuccessful writers is not that one group never gets blocked. The difference is that successful writers know how to maintain their creative rhythm even when inspiration is not flowing.

Start the New Year right by getting back into the rhythm of writing with this simple challenge.

Jacob Krueger?s
2013 SCREENWRITING CHALLENGE

On January 1st, go out and buy yourself a nice journal. Find something that speaks to your personality, and makes you feel like a writer. It?s okay to spend too much. Think of it as an investment in something you?re going to use every day.

On January 2nd, set your clock to wake you up 15 minutes early, and as soon as you open your eyes, grab your journal and start writing. You have 15 minutes to write as much or as little as comes out.? Don?t worry about editing, planning or even thinking.? Just go ahead and write whatever comes out as quickly as you possibly can. It may be a scene or parts of a scene. It may be a line of dialogue, or a monologue, or just thoughts about your character. It may flow together, or it may not flow together at all. Don?t even try to make it good. Just allow your first instincts to find their way onto the page. And don?t worry about finishing? you only have 15 minutes? so whatever you leave unfinished can become the starting point for the next day?s writing.

You?re going to repeat this process every day until January 30th, writing 15 minutes every morning until writing is such a natural part of your daily routine that it occurs without even thinking about it.? You may find yourself continuing one storyline, or writing a new one every morning. If you get stuck, rewrite the scene from the day before from memory. It?s not important what you write. It?s important THAT you write.

It?s this rhythm that is going to make you a writer. So, if you sleep through one day, find 15 minutes to catch up later. Take your journal with you on the subway. Lock yourself in the bathroom at work. Stay up 15 minutes later that night.? And notice how that 15 minutes in the morning sets you to thinking about your writing all through the day?

On January 31st, you?ll complete the challenge, and read back through your work over the past month. You?ll be amazed at the growth in your writing you?ll see!

Finally, on Thursday, Feb 7th, as part of our monthly Cold Cuts Reading Series we?ll have a party to celebrate the work of everyone who is participating in the challenge, to share our experiences, and to make some new friends. (There will also be a raffle for some super screenwriting prizes!)

You can officially join the challenge by liking our new FACEBOOK PAGE and RSVPing for the Screenwriting Challenge Event, where you can also share your ongoing experiences with your fellow writers!

Happy New Year! And Happy Writing!

(AP) ? Gunmen on motorcycles sprayed a van carrying employees from a community center with bullets Tuesday, killing five female teachers and two aid workers, but sparing a child they took out of the vehicle before opening fire.

The director of the group that the seven worked for says he suspects it may have been the latest in a series of attacks targeting anti-polio efforts in Pakistan. Some militants oppose the vaccination campaigns, accusing health workers of acting as spies for the U.S. and alleging the vaccine is intended to make Muslim children sterile.

Last month, nine people working on an anti-polio vaccination campaign were shot and killed. Four of those shootings were in the northwest where Tuesday's attack took place.

The attack was another reminder of the risks to women educators and aid workers from Islamic militants who oppose their work. It was in the same conservative province where militants shot and seriously wounded 15-year-old Malala Yousufzai, an outspoken young activist for girls' education, in October.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the latest shootings.

The teachers and health workers ? one man and one woman ? were killed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on their way home from a community center in the town of Swabi where they were employed at a medical clinic and primary school. Their driver was also injured.

Javed Akhtar, the director of Support With Working Solution, said the medical clinic vaccinated children against polio, and many of the NGO's staff had taken part in immunization campaigns.

Militants in the province have blown up schools and killed female educators. They have also kidnapped and killed aid workers, viewing them as promoting a foreign, liberal agenda.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, formerly called the Northwest Frontier province, borders the tribal areas of Pakistan along the frontier with Afghanistan to the west. Militant groups such as the Taliban have used the tribal areas as a stronghold from which to wage war both in Afghanistan and against the Pakistani government. Often that violence has spilled over into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

In 2007, the Taliban led by Maulana Fazlullah took over the scenic Swat Valley, marking the height of their strength there. The Pakistani military later pushed the militant group from the valley, but the Taliban has repeatedly tried to reassert itself.

The injured driver in Swabi told investigators that the gunmen stopped the vehicle and removed a boy ? the son of one of the women ? before indiscriminately opening fire, said police officer Fazal Malik. The woman's husband rushed to the scene after receiving a phone call alerting him to the shooting.

"I left everything and rushed towards the spot. As I reached there I saw their dead bodies were inside the vehicle and he (his son) was sitting with someone," said Zain ul Hadi.

Swabi police chief Abdur Rasheed said most of the women killed were between the ages of 20 and 22. He said four gunmen on two motorcycles fled the scene and have not been apprehended.

The NGO conducts education and health programs and runs the community center in Swabi, Akhtar said. The group has been active in the city since 1992, and started the Ujala Community Welfare Center in 2010, he added. Ujala means "light" in Urdu.

The center is financed by the Pakistani government's Poverty Alleviation Program and a German organization, said Akhtar.

He said the NGO also runs health and education projects in the South Waziristan tribal area, as well as health projects in the cities of Tank and Dera Ismail Khan and the regions of Lower Dir and Upper Kurram. All of those cities and regions are in northwest Pakistan, the area that has been most affected by the ongoing fight with militants opposed to the government.

Aid groups such as Support With Working Solution often play a vital role in many areas of Pakistan where the government has been unable to provide services such as medical clinics or schools.

Many aid groups that also work in the region are already familiar with the persistent threat militant groups pose, but the scale and viciousness of Tuesday's attack worried even veteran campaigners.

Maryam Bibi, who founded an organization called Khwendo Kor, which carries out education and development programs in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the nearby tribal areas, said she and many of her employees live in fear that they will be targeted next.

"I'm really very worried now because our girls go to the field. Our work is in the villages," said Bibi. She said many of the female employees of such organizations are already under pressure from family and a culture that frowns on women working outside the home and mixing with men.

"On top of that, they're shot dead," she said.

In some areas like the northwest, aid groups have had to work to overcome community fears that they are promoting a foreign agenda at odds with local traditions and values.

But many residents in Swabi said the school and medical center provided a vital service to the community, and they mourned those who were killed.

Murad Khan said his daughter was studying at the primary school, which provided free books and uniforms to students. He said many people in the area are worried that the school and clinic will close.

"This school is like a gift for all of us, the poor people of the village," he said. "People in our area are sad."

The NGO director said all projects will be suspended as security measures are reviewed but he vowed that they would resume their work soon.

He said the NGO had not received any threats before the attack.

In the southern city of Karachi, officials said four people were killed when a bomb in a parked motorcycle exploded amid a crowd of buses for political workers returning from the rally held by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement. The MQM is the dominant political party in Karachi.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

Dr. Saghir Ahmed, the provincial health minister, said that in addition to the dead, 41 people were injured.

Q A: Mikko Nissinen, Artistic Director of the ... - Travel Leisure

12.31.12

Throughout the United States, the holidays is the season for the Nutcracker ballet.? T+L spoke with Mikko Nissinen, the Finnish artistic director of the Boston Ballet and its new?and spectacular?production.

Q: Is this your first production of the Nutcracker in Boston?

A: ?No, when I came to Boston, I inherited an extravaganza that had contributions from seven choreographers! There is such a thing as too many cooks in the kitchen.? So I started to narrow down the production.? I staged the first act, the second act, the Land of Sweets, was by another choreographer.? For our new Nutcracker, I have staged the entire ballet, both acts.

Q: Why has Boston Ballet embarked on a new production?? It is expensive, no?

A: The former production was literally falling apart and coming apart at the seams.? This new production, with sets and costumes by Robert Perdziola, who has designed for opera and ballet, cost about $2.5 million and includes almost 200 costumes.? It is an investment, but it should have a shelf life of 20 years.? And the Christmas tree in the first act grows in a dazzling way as no other tree I have seen.? Perdziola is an extraordinary talent.

Q: How many performers are involved?

A: Counting the company, our second company, and the students from our ballet school, there is a total of 144 performers.

Q: The production is traditional in look.? Tell us about it.

A: Yes, it is reflective of the story by E.T. A. Hoffmann about the Nutcracker and the Mouse King with its 19th-century German setting.? I am a strong believer in this classic aspect of the tale while being aware that the ballet has to live in our time.? The Nutcracker has been successful for more than 120 years.? This tale of magical transformation is broad enough to appeal to children and adults, from little kids to grandparents, and it has Tchaikovsky's glorious score.??

Q: You are from Finland where your early training was at the Finland National Ballet school.? Was your first experience with the ballet there?

A: No, I didn't dance a role in the Nutcracker until I was 17.? I had gone to the Kirov Ballet School in St. Petersburg and danced my first role as the prince on the stage of the Mariinsky Theater.?

Q: Contrast that experience to today.

A: Unlike the United States, the Nutcracker in Europe is not a holiday ballet.? Here, however, the Nutcracker is for many the entry into the art form.? Because of this, I feel that the experience with the ballet and through its production be fresh every night.? It has to be engaging.? And it has to be challenging for the dancers.? In fact, I have made the choreography extremely difficult in technical terms because I want the dancers to challenge themselves.? In such a way, the company becomes stronger, both as dancers and as artists, by the end of the Nutcracker season rather than beaten down by the pace of approximately 40 shows.? It is very important the the Nutcracker fulfill the role of the art form and engage and delight its audience.

Roberts urges full financial support for the court

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Urging full financial support for the U.S. court system, Chief Justice John Roberts said in his year-end report Monday that the federal judiciary, unlike executive branch agencies, does not have discretionary programs it can eliminate or projects it can postpone.

The judiciary has been doing its part to carefully manage "its tiny portion of the federal budget" and because the courts have already pursued cost-containment so aggressively, it will become increasingly difficult to economize further without reducing the quality of judicial services, said Roberts.

The chief justice's report came amid a New Year's Eve drama as President Barack Obama worked with Congress to avert the fiscal cliff. The White House and congressional Republicans agreed to block across-the-board tax increases set for midnight, but held up a final deal as they haggled away the final hours of 2012 in a dispute over spending cuts.

Virtually all of the judiciary's core functions are constitutionally and statutorily required, Roberts said in his year-end report.

"The courts must resolve all criminal and civil cases that fall within their jurisdiction, often under tight time constraints," said Roberts. "A significant and prolonged shortfall in judicial funding would inevitably result in the delay or denial of justice for the people the courts serve."

"I therefore encourage the president and Congress to be especially attentive to the needs of the judicial branch and provide the resources necessary for its operations," said Roberts.

In the just-ended fiscal year, the Supreme Court requested an appropriation of $75.6 million for judicial operations ? a 2.8 percent decrease from the previous year's $77.8 million. In the current fiscal year that began Oct. 1, the Supreme Court's appropriation request rose to $77.2 million, largely in response to new judicial security needs ? but still less than its fiscal year 2011 request.

In his report, Roberts said that for fiscal year 2014, the court will submit an appropriation request of $74.9 million ? a 3.7 percent decrease from its fiscal year 2011 request.

The chief justice said that in the 2012 fiscal year, the judiciary, including the Supreme Court, other federal courts, the Administrative Office of the United States Courts, and the Federal Judicial Center, received $6.97 billion in appropriations, representing "a mere two-tenths of 1 percent of the United States' total budget of $3.7 trillion."

A Quarter of a Million Downloads ? End of 2012 Metrics for Hunter Davis on the Google Play Store

When looking back on 2012, it was a pretty successful year for both myself, and Google. They released a hot new tablet, and their app store has done remarkably well. One of my personal successes was the open sourcing of all of my android apps and other software back in April. Now, at the end of 2012 I feel that in the spirit of open source software I should share all the metrics about my apps on the Play store. The bottom line is, things are going pretty well. Installs are on the rise, and I love sharing software with people.

You can view or download the embedded spreadsheet below. I?ve highlighted some interesting findings in the list directly below.

  • My apps have been downloaded from the Play store a total of 223,872 times.
  • My apps have (today) 27,508 active installs from the Play store.
  • The average number of installs per app is 3k.
  • The average active installs per app (today) is 410.
  • During 2012 I received 10 total emails from users of my apps requesting bug fixes. I responded to every one.
  • During 2012 I received 15 total emails for feature requests, I implemented 8 of them.
  • Since becoming a Play store developer in May 2011, I have published 68 apps. I have pulled one app and had one app suspended due to DMCA request by Atari (custom pong.)
  • All of my apps have crashed a total of 63 times. That?s less than one crash per year per app on average.
  • The #1 most downloaded app is ?Easy Cat Whistle? with 48K, followed by ?Easy Pest Control? with 17k, and a three way tie with ?Easy Side by Side?, ?Easy Graph Paper?, and ?Easy File Split and Join? each having about 10-11k.
  • The app with the most active installs is ?Easy Side by Side? with 3860, followed by ?Easy Cat Whistle? with 3459 and ?Easy Inventory? with 2629
  • The average rating for one of my apps is 3.6 (out of 5). The average number of people who actually rate an app is ten.
  • My one paid app (Super Whistle) took about two hours to complete and has been purchased 53 times, netting me ~40$
  • I make about 50$ monthly on in-app advertising during the summer months, and 100$ during the winter months (this is not captured in this document, only through my bank statements). That?s about 2 times as much as I made from my monthly book sales in 2012, but only 1/150th of my monthly salary from working 9-5 jobs in 2012. Do note however, that most of these apps haven?t been updated since I initially published them in 2011, and advertising revenue continues to slowly rise. This slowly increases the return on those hours spent writing the apps initially.

As you can see, as an Android developer, I still get significantly more financial return from my time investment by working for an established organization. Not that money should generally be the driving force in your career, but for most of us it weighs in significantly. Mobile developers are the hot commodity right now, and companies can?t hire them fast enough or compensate them highly enough. It?s a volatile and exciting market that once again won?t be the same in a year. It likely won?t even resemble what it was a year ago. Those who know how to navigate the choppy waters of new technologies can, as usual, write their own checks. That said, it?s always good to have another revenue stream.

There?s also something incredibly satisfying about sharing software with people, especially when it is open sourced.
