Next iPhone's tiny docking connector possibly spotted

Next iPhone's tiny docking cable possibly seen, might help complete the puzzle

We've seen the rumored next iPhone's minuscule docking port more than once. Any of the cabling that plugs into that port, however, has been non-existent until today. If photos slipped to Nowhereelse.fr are more than just flights of fancy, they show a much narrower and possibly slimmer connector that matches up with the hole we've seen. It's so small that a full-size USB connector dwarfs it by comparison, and there's only eight contact pins per side (or possibly total) versus the 30 overall that we know today. We're not told if there are any special tricks besides the size reduction, though: while the new cable end looks dual-sided, there's no guarantee Apple will have eliminated the right-side-up requirement that afflicts just about every mobile-sized port format we've seen to date. If real, the redesign could lead to one less hassle for charging and syncing. It just wouldn't be much consolation to those who'd been hoping for a switch to a standard like micro-USB -- or, for that matter, to long-time iPhone owners who may have to give up or convert legions of accessories.

How Effectively Are You Using Your Time? | Self improvement tips

One of the most important skills busy people interested in self improvement, achievement and success can learn is effective time management. There are more demands on our time today than ever, everybody has too much to do, and it is easy to be overwhelmed with the sheer amount of information that confronts us each day. For most busy people, all their time is taken up, or at least it seems that way.

Time is actually the most valuable thing we all have. Time can neither be replaced nor saved for the future. But can you really manage time? Everyone on earth has only 24 hours a day, so why is it that some people can achieve so much more than others? It may come naturally to these people, or maybe they?ve made a conscious decision to learn the necessary skills.

Thinking about and deciding what is most important in your life is probably the best starting point for effective personal time management. If you have worked out what you want to achieve in the most important areas of you life, it should automatically be easier to use your time more effectively. If you regularly think about what is really important to you, it?s likely you will want to spend more of your time on high value activities.

Another way to improve personal time management almost immediately is to simply make the effort to think about time before spending it. Ideally, at all times you should be working on your highest value tasks, tasks that will move you closer to you goals and desires.

One of the most effective ways to increase productivity and get more done in less time is to write down everything you have to do and then to put everything in order of importance. Your most important tasks are the ones you must do. These are the tasks that will bring the greatest benefits, or that will have serious consequences if neglected.

Next in order of importance are those tasks you should do, but aren?t as important as your ?must do? tasks. After this are the tasks that it would be nice to do, but are of little, or even no real importance.

When you put everything down in writing

it helps to clear your mind and allows you to see things more clearly. You will often find that you actually have less to do than you thought. You may well find things on your list that you will be now consider, when seen in writing, as of no real value, that you can eliminate altogether.

The next step is to put your must do tasks in order of importance, and start working on the most important of these it until finished. Often the most important tasks are things that we don?t really like to do, which can make them the hardest to start. But this is one of the most important of all steps for increased productivity and effective time management. At all times you should be working on your most important and highest value tasks. Less important or lower value tasks should never be started when there are more important tasks unfinished.

One of the worst ways to manage time is to start something and leave it to move on to other things. When you return to it, you?ll have lost momentum and track of where you were, and sometimes will have to almost start all over again. Some estimates claim that this can cause it to take up to 500% longer to complete any task.

If you have decided your most important task and started working on it, the reality is, that according to your own priorities, anything else, by comparison, is a waste of time.

There is no doubt you will greatly increase your productivity by writing down and prioritising everything you need to do, and sticking to your most important tasks until they are completed. It takes discipline and perhaps some practice, but it?s one of the most valuable of all time and life management skills.

Sarkozy ignites furor with push for foreign intervention in Syria

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy, who spearheaded air strikes in Libya that helped topple Muammar Qaddafi, is calling for ?rapid? foreign intervention in Syria to ?avoid a massacre? ? breaking a public silence since his political defeat in May, and pushing President Fran?ois Hollande to take a more active hand as Syrian fighter jets strafe neighborhoods in Aleppo.

But reaction in France has been hot and roundly critical, with senior officials saying the two crisis points are very different, and that Mr. Sarkozy is being impulsive.

Sarkozy sent French fighter jets to relieve the besieged city of Benghazi in the spring of 2011 to avoid a looming massacre of rebels who wanted Mr. Qaddafi out. A joint statement issued after Sarkozy spoke with members of the opposition Syrian National Council yesterday said, "They agreed that there are great similarities with the Libyan crisis.?

Members of Sarkozy?s party, meanwhile, called for Mr. Hollande to ?immediately? end his vacation and get further involved.

Yet current and former French foreign ministers today challenged the idea that Libya, which is not surrounded by other diverse and unpredictable states, and whose UN intervention was supported by Arab nations ? is comparable to Syria.

?I am surprised that Mr. Sarkozy wants to stir up controversy on such a serious subject,? said foreign minister Laurent Fabius in the French press today. ?One would expect something different from a former president. The situation in Syria is obviously very different from that of Libya.?

RELATED: Syria: 5 warring factions

HOW TO HELP?

The issue goes to the heart of a wrenching debate over how to help Syria, even as the Kofi Annan peace plan has been put aside and high-level defections from Bashir al-Assad?s regime continue. Russia and China have continued to oppose Western answers to the crisis in the UN Security Council.

"In the Libyan case, there was a cry to help insurgents in Benghazi,? posits Hubert V?drine, a former French foreign minister. ?This was supported by the Cooperation Council for the Arab Gulf States, and supported by the Arab League.? There was a ?demand for action, meaning that ? Russia and China in the Security Council were on the spot and did not dare to veto."

CALLS TO 'OVERTURN WARINESS'

Yet Sarkozy, as in his Libya venture, can count on influential intellectuals here like Bernard-Henri L?vy, long a proponent of humanitarian intervention, and a leader in the French effort on Libya.

"We need [British Prime Minister David] Cameron and Hollande to overturn this wariness and cowardice and prevent an impending massacre.? Mr. L?vy told Reuters today. ?What is looming in Aleppo will be a disgrace which, if we do nothing, will be on our consciences for a long time.?

PHOTO GALLERY: Inside Aleppo, Syria

Today as well, former British foreign secretary Malcolm Rifkind called for arming Syrian rebels, though did not support foreign intervention. Mr. Rifkind said his own support of a UN arms embargo on Yugoslavia in the early 1990s was mistaken, since it ended up helping Serbs (who had access to Yugoslav Army weapons) and harmed the Bosnian Muslims (who did not).

Samir Aita, a member of a Syrian opposition group that backs a secular future in that state, told the Monitor that ?Libya had 100,000 dead and Syria could have hundreds of thousands more. Sarkozy in France will do for Syria what George W. Bush in America did for Iraq. The French must propose a solution, and while Hollande is preoccupied by the financial crisis in Europe, it needs to be workable.

?We need a cease-fire, not more weapons, since what we now see is a breakup into sectarian strife,? said Mr. Aita, who is also senior editor of Le Monde Diplomatique.

Questions about Sarkozy?s political motives are never far from the surface of policy discussions here. Some commentators note that prior to may elections, Sarkozy vowed that if defeated, he would disappear from public life and the French would never hear from him again.

?It seems that Sarkozy is still somewhat sour after his defeat at the presidential elections, and is using the highly emotional Syria issue to take a cheap shot at Hollande and undermine French diplomacy,? says Karim Emile Bitar of the Institute for Strategic and International Relations in Paris. ?But the French have not forgotten Sarkozy?s long honeymoon with Assad and they know the enormous differences between Libya and Syria. Syria?s geostrategic positioning and its sectarian heterogeneity render foreign intervention extremely risky, not to mention the absence of a UN Security Council consensus."

5 Olympic Lessons For Workplace Wellness | GlobalFit Blog

We?ve all got Olympic fever. Cheering for our country, rooting for our favorite athletes, marveling at the dedication and talent of the Olympians ? what?s better? Nothing. But alongside the patriotism they inspire, the Olympics also offer valuable lessons about wellness that we can all apply to workplace wellness:

?

Competition is infectious:? Healthy competition can be a powerful motivator! Rivalries force us to take stock of our capabilities and push ourselves farther than ever before. Consider the Lochte-Phelps intra-team rivalry, or the side-by-side training of competing sprinters Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake.

?

Champions Inspire: Exceptional individuals can inspire large groups of people to perform better and work harder. Not everyone has to be a top athlete or the most consistent exerciser, but those that do excel set a powerful example for others to follow. Just look how gymnast Gabby Douglas inspired her teammates to win the gold ? your employees can do the same for each other.

?

Everyone can succeed: Regardless of results and medals, all Olympic athletes are impressive and extraordinary. By the same token, wellness will be helpful for all employees, regardless of where they fall on the health and fitness spectrum. No one can argue that Oscar Pistorious? semi-final race was just as impressive as any gold medal sprint, and for the same reason, one employee?s new walking routine can be just as life-changing as another?s marathon.

?

Support Is A Strong Statement: Heads of state always visit the Olympics to cheer on their athletes. And for good reason: by supporting those doing difficult, even seemingly impossible physical tasks, leaders are validating the effort, dedication, and training of their country?s athletes. You can do the same for your own employees: cheer on those that are making difficult life changes to show that their hard work is noticed.

?

A Little Motivation Goes A Long Way: Okay?so Olympians don?t have merely ?a little? motivation. More like boatloads of it. And that?s the special ingredient: It?s dedication, not genetics, that buoys some competitors to the top while others never triumph. With applied dedication and social support, even your most athletically inexperienced employees can make huge strides, improving their health and their lives.

Airlines' bid to suspend taxes rejected | SaigonMoney.com - The ...

A jet fuel truck refills a Vietnam Airlines aircraft in this file photo. Vietnam Airlines and Jetstar Pacific Airlines fail in their bid to delay paying environment tax and VAT on jet fuel - - Photo: Mong Binh

The Ministry of Finance has rejected the proposals of Vietnam Airlines and Jetstar Pacific Airlines to suspend the collection of VAT and environment taxes on jet fuel if the oil price rises to US$118 a barrel or more.
In a document sent to related ministries and agencies and the two companies on Tuesday, Deputy Minister of Finance Vu Thi Mai said collecting VAT and environment protection tax is subject to the rules of the National Assembly Standing Committee. Therefore, the involved companies are required to adhere to the tax payment in line with the law, Mai asserted.

The application of petrol import tax should be based on the finance ministry?s regulation upon import schedules. The prevalent tariff is now fixed at 12% as per Circular 109/2012/TT-BTC issued on July 3, 2012 but the ministry said the lowest level might be put at 7%.

In May, both airlines submitted to the ministry the petitions clarifying their current financial plight in an effort to persuade the ministry to delay the tax collection schedule.

Vietnam Airlines complained that it was unable to obtain the year?s target in the first four months due to the economic slowdown. Moreover, rising input costs with the average fuel price picking up by 7.4% compared to the planned price has pushed the national flag carrier?s expenses up by VND303 billion.

Vietnam Airlines asked for assistance from the ministry by not imposing import taxes on jet fuel if the fuel price stays at US$118 a barrel or higher.

Similarly, Jester Pacific in its submission also proposed the ministry to levy an import tariff of 0% if the fuel cost is fixed from US$110 per barrel.

In response to the two aviation firms? requests, the finance ministry insisted that jet fuel bought at home is levied an environment tax of VND1,000 a liter and VAT of 10%.

Meanwhile, the imported products are imposed an import tariff of 12% besides the aforesaid environment tax and VAT.

Space junkies try to explain mysterious image in photo from Mars rover

This handout image from NASA, one of the first images from the Curiosity rover which landed on Mars the evening??

A mysterious blotch that appeared along the horizon in a photo from the surface of Mars stirred speculation about what it might be, as two hours later it was gone.

One image from the Curiosity rover as it landed on the fourth planet from the sun showed a "faint but distinctive" image on the horizon, the Los Angeles Times reported. However, a subsequent batch of images sent from the unmanned rover two hours later showed no trace of the blotch.

One theory put forth by space enthusiasts in the L.A. Times story is that Curiosity had somehow snapped a photo of part of the spacecraft that escorted the rover through the Martian atmosphere crash-landing a distance away.

[Slideshow: Latest images from Mars]

But to capture that image "would be an insane coincidence," one engineer told the newspaper.

Others say more feasible possibilities would be simply dirt on the lens, or maybe a dust devil twisting far in the distance.

But as more images start to pour into NASA, more is being learned about the rover's pinpoint landing.

In what some are dubbing the "crime scene" photo of the landing zone taken by another satellite, Curiosity is seen on the ground along with pieces of the spacecraft that broke apart as planned on the way to the surface. The photo reveals the heat shield that protected the rover as it entered the atmosphere and the parachute that helped ease the vehicle onto Mars. Also seen are parts of the "sky crane," the spacecraft that carried the rover to the planet, the article noted.

Could the sky crane crashing be the blotch? From another L.A. Times story:

The crime scene photo showed that the sky crane had crash-landed, as designed, about 2,000 feet away?and in the same direction that Curiosity's camera was pointed when it snapped the first photo showing the blotch. The new satellite photo also showed that the sky crane, when it crash-landed, kicked up a violent wave of dirt that had scarred the surface of Mars.

Curiosity mission manager Michael Watkins told the Times if it were the case, "it would be incredibly cool. ... A crazy, serendipitous thing."

Images from Mars have always fueled curiosity.

Remember what folks thought was a huge face on Mars? An image from Viking 1 in 1976 that appeared to show a rock formation with eyes, a nose and a mouth? Later high-resolution imaging and side-by-side analysis proved the "face" to be a mesa, like the flat-topped natural formations found in the southwestern U.S.

As the Curiosity rover readies to begin the scientific discovery part of the mission, maybe more interesting things will be revealed.
