Bahamas To Take Part In Discrimination Conference | The Bahamas ...

The Bahamas will participate in a United Nations (UN) committee that deals with eliminating all forms of discrimination.

Social Services Minister Melanie Griffin will lead a Bahamian delegation to the UN in New York later this week.??The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women consists of 23 experts on women?s rights from around the world.?

According to the UN website, countries that have signed on to the convention ? 185 countries in total ? must submit country reports outlining how the rights of the convention are being implemented in areas such as education, employment, marriage and family relations, healthcare, politics, finance and law.? ???This meeting will allow The Bahamas to dialogue with the committee regarding what policies and legislation we have put in place for the protection of women, in fact all persons, who experience domestic or family violence,? the social services minister said.???The dialogue will also allow us to state all of the advancements/provisions we have put in place for the advancement and protection, not only for those persons experiencing domestic violence, but also what we have done in terms of education and awareness and other areas.?
?Minister Griffin said she is ?absolutely satisfied? with the progress The Bahamas has made to address many of the issues that would be of concern to the United Nations committee ? particularly at the legislative, governmental and business levels ? even though there ?is still much more to be done.????For example, in 2007, we would have passed the Domestic Violence (Protection Orders Act), which was a landmark piece of legislation that expanded domestic violence to encompass persons outside of the marriage,? she said.???Before then, the wider population was outside of the benefits and protection of the law and so that was a strong piece of legislation. It also put in place Protection Orders that women or anyone who are victims of domestic violence could access. These Protection Orders would have replaced the old Binding Over Orders which did not carry a power of arrest.???Mrs. Griffin said the new orders also addressed stalking and financial abuse against a spouse or partner where one partner withholds money from the other as a form of discrimination, control or abuse.??She said another key area of the legislation was the amendment to the Sexual Offences Act that increased the punishment for rape, which she said, was extremely important.???I am satisfied that in The Bahamas women have been able to reach the upper echelon of society in both the private and public sector,? Mrs. Griffin said.

?You will find that we have women at key levels at all strata of society be it in government where we have had a woman serve as deputy prime minister and governor-general and where many of the permanent secretaries and other key, senior officials are, or have been, females as has been the case in the justice System. Many women are advancing up the corporate ladder across The Bahamas while many more have had many successes as entrepreneurs and have helped the country to make advances in culture, athletics, banking and finance, healthcare and academia, and so on.???Mrs. Griffin will be accompanied by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Services, Barbara Burrows, in addition to other senior Social Services officials and those from the ministries of Foreign Affairs, Health and Education, and the Bureau of Women?s Affairs.

The Traveling Gamer ? Netbook Games ? NewbCast Gaming

As a gamer, it can be tough to be away from your favorite games ? So many different games require attention in order to stay relevant to the top tier of play! ?So, what do you do when you aren?t available for a week or two on your main computer? ?The good news is, there are more than a few ways to divert yourself from the fact that you?re going to get ranked down in your Starcraft 2 ladder! ?Here are a few of my favorites while you?re out of the house:

Diablo 2: ?Most netbooks can handle it processor-wise (though take a look at your screen resolution, there are netbooks out there with low pixel counts!) and it?s easy to download through battle.net servers online. ?The dungeon crawler style has yet to be matched by any other series (nostalgiacs will say that D2 is better than the recent addition!) and it?s easy enough to play with a touchpad mouse ? at least with most builds.

Kingdom of Loathing: ?Browser-based games are always easy to play anywhere and are designed to be a quick play or two. ?Kingdom of Loathing is a pun-filled tongue-in-cheek RPG that is sure to keep you searching for more adventures. ?Choose from quirky roles such as the Disco Bandit, the mystical Pastamancer, or the aggressive Seal Clubber (I kid you not). ?Play is free, though with some support to the developers you can get fancy perks. ?For those who do infrequent travel, a Mr. A helps by permanently saving your account. ?It seems my last one got deleted. . .

Forumwarz: ?In the same regard as Kingdom of Loathing, Forumwarz is an entertaining play on forum trolling turned into an RPG. ?Though the multiplayer aspect of the game has long since passed, the singleplayer adventure is still definitely worth a few playthroughs. ?The first act is free, and various bonuses may be unlocked through in game purchases called brownie points. ?If you?re a fan of push-button MMOs, Forumwarz is a wonderfully cyncial alternative for you.

Tyrian 2000 / Good Old Games: ?One of the biggest challenges of playing on a netbook is the lack of a hard disk drive necessary to install those older games that otherwise work fine on a less beefy system. ?Good Old Games is a great solution for netbooks as a result. ?Plus, many older computer games (Tyrian) play well without a mouse, meaning you don?t have to worry about whether or not you packed yours on your trip. ?Many of those old games are still good and definitely worth replaying!

?

Castle of the Winds: CotW is perhaps my favorite Roguelike RPG of all time. ?Call it nostalgia (I hear the groans already), but there is something incredibly entertaining about a classic dungeon crawler. ?A few good ones have come out for mobile platforms, but nothing comes to that perfect balance of difficulty like Castle. ?The original first chapter was originally offered as shareware (another archaic word of technologies long past), but now the full game is available for access. ?Fair warning, it can be difficult to access everything in the dungeon as normal without a full keyboard ? In my replay, I pulled out the virtual keyboard in my system for a few key moments. ?Entirely worth the effort!

Rebels battle to 'liberate' Syria capital

Rebels declared the battle to "liberate" Damascus has begun as heavy fighting raged across the city on Tuesday and Russia said an agreement is possible for a UN resolution on the Syria crisis.

The proclamation by the Free Syrian Army, which also claimed it had shot down a helicopter in the capital, came as peace envoy Kofi Annan said the 16-month crisis increasingly described as a civil war was at a "critical time."

Heavy machinegun fire was reported in Damascus's Sabaa Bahrat Square, where President Bashar al-Assad's regime has staged rallies to counter anti-regime protests that erupted in March 2011.

At least eight people were killed as tanks and helicopter gunships were deployed in Qaboon district, while battles were fought in Al-Midan and Al-Hajar Al-Aswad, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

As the fighting inched closer to the regime's nerve centre, FSA spokesman Colonel Kassem Saadeddine said "victory is nigh" and the struggle would go on until the city was conquered.

"We have transferred the battle from Damascus province to the capital. We have a clear plan to control the whole of Damascus. We only have light weapons, but it's enough."

"Expect surprises," Saadeddine added, before adding later that rebels had downed a helicopter over Qaboon, although an activist in the district said there was "no foundation" to the report.

Fighting in the city has raged since Sunday, with the rebels announcing a full-scale offensive dubbed "the Damascus volcano and earthquakes of Syria."

An activist who said he was in Al-Midan neighbourhood said the army was shelling the neighbourhood "hysterically."

"The collapsing regime has gone mad," the man calling himself Abu Musab said via Skype.

"The army has tried to storm the district, but the Free Syrian Army has stopped them. So they have intensified their shelling. They are shelling everything," he said.

AFP could not independently verify the account.

Witnesses also reported heavy machinegun fire in Sabaa Bahrat Square in central Damascus and in nearby Baghdad Street.

But an army officer in Damascus told AFP that troops have "the situation under control" and were "chasing the terrorists seeking refuge in apartments and mosques."

The source said "battles raged" in Qaboon, "where the majority of rebels were," adding that "33 terrorists were killed, 15 were wounded and 145 were arrested," referring to rebels.

The regime has vowed not to surrender the capital.

In that context, the Israeli army's intelligence chief said Syrian troops had been moved from the Golan Heights towards conflict zones including Damascus.

"Assad has removed many of his forces that were in the Golan Heights to the areas of conflict," Major General Aviv Kochavi told MPs.

"Radical Islam" was gaining ground, he warned, adding that Syria was undergoing a process of "Iraqisation," with militant and tribal factions controlling different zones.

In Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin told Annan that he would "do everything" to support the UN-Arab League peace envoy's plan to end the conflict.

Annan told Putin "the Syrian crisis is at a critical time."

Later, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said he saw "no reason why we cannot also agree at the UN Security Council. We are ready for this."

Annan added: "The Council, I expect, will be sending out a message that the killings must stop and that the situation on the ground is unacceptable."

Annan's Moscow meetings came one day before Western powers plan to hold a vote on a UN resolution that threatens sanctions against Damascus.

The council must also vote to decide on renewing the 300-strong UN Supervision Mission in Syria, deployed to monitor an April 12 ceasefire Assad agreed with Annan.

UN leader Ban Ki-moon "called on Russia to use its influence to ensure the full and immediate implementation" of Annan's plan in a telephone call with Lavrov, a spokesman said.

Ban is due in Beijing on Tuesday, also on a mission to get support for tougher action on Syria.

Russia and China have twice blocked resolutions against Syria at the Security Council, which remains divided over Western calls to impose new sanctions.

On a visit to Syria's neighbour Jordan, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said the crisis is too unpredictable to rule out "any option."

Stepping up the pressure, French President Francois Hollande said "the Russians must understand that they cannot be seen as the only ones or almost the only ones hindering the search for a solution."

As wrangling continued over rival resolution drafts, the Security Council expressed concern about fallout from the conflict in Lebanon, UN diplomats said.

UN envoy to Lebanon Derek Plumbly said there was "concern about the pressures on the Lebanese border in recent weeks, incursions and shooting across the border."

The Observatory said at least 35 people were killed across Syria on Tuesday, 16 of them civilians, adding to its toll of more than 17,000 people dead since the uprising began.

Meanwhile, Nawaf Fares, who became the most prominent figure to abandon Assad when he defected as Syria's ambassador to Iraq, warned the regime will use chemical weapons against opposition forces and may have already deployed them.

Another key defector, General Manaf Tlass, a childhood friend of Assad, said in a statement sent to AFP that he was in Paris and called for a "constructive transition" in the country.

We Welcome Wagas Sandwich Cafe to Sanlitun Village - LumDimSum

Sharing Small Tastings of Beijing's Party & Foodie Scene

Posted: July 17th, 2012 | Author: LumDimSum | Filed under: Foodies & Dining Scene, Hot Tips | Tags: Element Fresh, Hatsune Sanlitun, Karaiya Spice House, Modo, Sanlitun Village, Union Bar & Grill, Wagas | No Comments ?

Wagas, Beijing Welcomes You to Sanlitun Village

It was a sad story when Wagas came and quickly left Beijing back when it tried to first open in Xidan a few years back, but now that they?re perched in prime real estate in the third floor of Sanlitun Village surrounded by popular dining destinations Modo, Hatsune, Karaiya Spice House and Element Fresh, Wagas should have a different story to tell this second time around.

A popular chain of over a decade in Shanghai, Wagas is an award winning cafe chain that has earned a strong reputation down there serving happy customers a range of ?everyday food ? gourmet sandwiches, pasta, salad, cake, fresh juice, smoothie and coffee?. They now have 25 branches in Shanghai and their plans of expansion are only growing with their second try at a first successful branch in Beijing.

And they are off to a seriously strong start.

Barely open a few weeks, this place is already buzzing with great vibes and energy day in and day out. ?With it?s no-fuss menu highlighting simple sandwiches, paninis, spinach wraps and salads, you can expect them to be jam-packed during lunches but the real test is how Wagas fares after the initial ?new opening in Beijing? excitement wares off (after about 6 months). ?Beijingers are known to be fickle and much more picky, judgmental and price-sensitive than many other foodie markets, including (dare I say it), our Shanghainese rivals. ?But it?s understandable considering how spoiled for choice we are with new restaurants and bars opening on a daily basis.

I wasn?t surprised to see Wagas packed all lunch and all afternoon mid-week (on a Wednesday to be precise), but the true test they passed was that they stayed packed even on a quiet Monday evening (literally last night).

That being said, I was also flabbergasted to find that it?s neighbor and potential rival, Element Fresh?is closed! ?After a bit of poking around (serious investigative spywork), it turns out Element Fresh is ?closed for renovations? until September 2012, but my trusted source (who prefers to stay anonymous) says it could be closed as long as 6 months.

Goodbye for the next 6 months, Element Fresh

What?s even more surprising is that Union Bar & Grille is now only operating as a bar for the next few months as its kitchen is also closed down for a few months.

Can Union Bar & Grill Survive Much Longer Only as a Bar?

The reasons behind these recent ?renovations? and changes are yet to be revealed, but I?d be curious to know whether the Wagas? recent opening has had any immediate effect on the business of Element Fresh and Union Bar & Grille.

I would be quick to presume that easy-to-spread rumor to be true, but it is suspicious to see Element Fresh close it?s doors for most of summer (it?s busiest part of the year) for ?renovations? just a few weeks after a fellow Shanghai chain moves in as its new neighbor.

If you haven?t seen the stylish, bright and open space of Wagas yourself, here are a few LDS snapshots to give you a glimpse of space and it?s vibe. ?Although the space isn?t massively large and they don?t take reservations in advance and there aren?t any toilets inside, somehow it all works. There?s never a line of people waiting for a table with people coming and going all day with a balance of people either popping in for a quick bite, meeting with friends or business associates or spending the entire afternoon here on free wifi.

Wagas is Proving it?s Popularity: It?s Even Busy on a Monday night at 9PM

With Wagas? undeniably positive vibes and ambiance established, what?s the fuss about? ?How are people this excited over basic, every day sandwiches and salads? ?It?s not like this is the first restaurant in Beijing to offer this kind of menu and service. And it?s certainly not cheap.

So if there are other options that are just as good and priced much lower than Wagas, it begs to question what Wagas is doing differently than every other sandwich cafes in town.

I was only able to snap up a handful of photos before the manager jumped in front of my camera and told me that photos are ?forbidden? here. If only they knew that I was taking photos for their benefit?oh well. You get the idea.

Wagas Doesn?t Like Me Taking Photos

And after dining here on two separate occasions, once for lunch and once for dinner, I have reached an unexpected conclusion. ?Initially, before I had actually enjoyed a meal here myself, I was just as excited about Wagas? opening. They have a reputation that proceeds them and everyone who has ever lived in Shanghai or has been to a Wagas in Shanghai raves about it being the best thing ever. Exaggeration aside, expectations were implanted and after my first lunch at Wagas, I was slightly disappointed.

Nothing was terrible, but nothing was mind-blowing either. I tasted my friend?s Turkish Vegetarian Panini, which was, to our disappointment, much smaller than we had imagined and although my Spinach Chicken Salad Wrap was bigger portioned than her Panini, it also wasn?t a dish I?d be rushing back to have. ?The smoothies we ordered were both tasty, but also pricey at RMB 40 each.

And although every single dessert made me want to salivate all over myself, I thought it all looked better than it tasted (after tasting both the blueberry cheesecake and carrot & zucchini cupcake).

Wagas? Fresh Juice: (L) Pineapple, Apple & Mint / (R) Mango, Apple, Banana (RMB 40)

Wagas Smoothie: (Center) Peach, Banana, Passionfruit, Oats, Honey, Yogurt, Low-Fat Milk (RMB 40)

Wagas Turkish Panini with Roast Pumpkin, Almonds, Coriander, Spinach & Gauda (RMB 48)

Wagas? Spinach Wrap with Pesto Chicken Salad, Bacon Bits, Roast Tomato, Onion and Leaves (RMB 50)

Coming back again for dinner, I ordered entirely different dishes, hoping for a better experience and it worked. Unlike their panini and wraps, their salads are served in a super big bowl and portions seem much bigger for about the same price (RMB 48-56). ?I tried the Chicken, Mango, Avocado Salad (RMB 56) and it was very tasty and as good as my imagination led me to wish for.

And the pasta dishes were even better. We only started off our dinner with two pastas and a salad, but they were gone in the blink of an eye and we happily went to order a third. Our favorite is the Chorizo pasta, which is the first dish I really think stands out as something exceptional and worth going back again for. I?d also recommend the Chicken Zucchini Pesto Pasta to try, but the Asparagus Pasta-of-the-Day was bland and tasteless.

Wagas? Salad: Chicken, Mango, Avocado Salad with Lemon Honey Mustard Dressing on the Side (RMB 56)

Wagas? Pasta: Fusili, Chicken Zucchini, Parmesan, Tomato Pesto (RMB 52)

Wagas? Pasta: Fusili, Chorizo, Spinach, Chili, Tomato Sauce, Parmesan (RMB 52)

Wagas? Pasta Daily Special: Fusili, Asparagus, Spinach, Parmesan (RMB 52)

Of all the dishes on the Wagas menu, I guarantee one of their top selling items are all from their dessert counter display showcasing a range of muffins, cakes, danishes, cupcakes, cookies and pastries.

Their farmhouse carrot cake is famously delicious and it lives up to its expectations. ?It?s incredibly moist and the added chunks of walnut and dried fruit for added consistency is genius. This is quite possible the best carrot cake in town. ?Anyone strongly disagree?

Wagas Dessert: Farmhouse Carrot Cake (RMB 18)

While the carrot cake is phenomenal, I can?t say the same for the blueberry cheesecake and the carrot & zucchini cupcake. ?The blueberry cheesecake reminds me exactly of a Blueberry Eggo Waffle. If your?e not American, you may have never had the pleasure of enjoying one of these, but I grew up on them and as much as I like them, it?s not actually a compliment to compare Wagas? blueberry cheesecake to an Eggo waffle, which basically implies that it tastes artificial and not the way a rich, cheesy cheesecake ought to taste. ?And I should mention that the slice of cheesecake was disproportionally small compared to the other desserts we?ve tried at Wagas.

And also unlike the slice of delicious farmhouse carrot cake, the carrot & zucchini cupcake was on the opposite side of the moist and fluffy spectrum for a very dry and dense muffin. ?Photographic proof displayed below (it even looks dry).

Wagas Dessert: Blueberry Cheesecake (RMB 20)

Review of?Wagas: Sandwiched between Modo and Element Fresh on the 3rd floor of Sanlitun Village, S8-33, 3F Building 8, 19 Sanlitun Lu, Chaoyang District,????????19??8??3?S8?33;?Open Daily from 8AM-10PM

Best Part:

  • Their carrot cake is quite possibly the best carrot cake in Beijing.?
  • Sandwiches and wraps are good, but salads are much bigger portioned and the Chorizo Pasta is my favorite thing on their menu.
  • Try their fresh smoothies and juices. ?I recommend the Wagas Smoothie (RMB 32 for small or RMB 40 for large) and Pineapple, Apple & Mint Juice (RMB 34 for small or RMB 40 for large).
  • They have free WIFI. ?It wasn?t working last night, but it was pretty smooth and fast the first time I came for lunch. ?For those who are looking to spend an afternoon in a cafe with free WIFI, Wagas would be a good option if they get their WIFI connection stabilized. There are plenty of hot and iced coffee drinks to choose from and keep you highly caffeinated throughout the day.?

Comments:

  • The ambiance and vibe is what sets Wagas apart from its competition. ?The food itself is decent, but aside from a few stand-out dishes and their fresh juice and smoothie selection, it?s not better than every other sandwich cafe in Beijing. ?That being said, they have a winning formula and I am confident that Wagas will be very successful in its new location in Sanlitun Village.
  • Unlike many of the dining establishments in the Village, there is no toilet here so you?ll have to find a public one outside if you need to find a loo.
  • Lucky for Wagas, it?s competitive neighbor Element Fresh has just closed down for at least a few months for ?renovations? and Union Bar & Grill is also now operating solely as a sports bar, without a kitchen.
  • It?s bound to be a very popular, if not the most popular sandwich cafe in Beijing. ?Jam-packed for lunch, they have a take-away option and lucky for those who want to dine in, there?s always a smooth flow of customers coming and leaving (quick turn-around for table seating).?

Rating: (on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being best)

Mothers who give birth to large infants at increased risk for breast cancer

ScienceDaily (July 17, 2012) ? Delivering a high-birth-weight infant more than doubles a woman's breast cancer risk, according to research from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. The researchers suggest that having a large infant is associated with a hormonal environment during pregnancy that favors future breast cancer development and progression.

Marking the first time that high birth weight was shown to be an independent risk factor, the finding may help improve prediction and prevention of breast cancer decades before its onset.

"We also found that women delivering large babies -- those in the top quintile of this study, which included babies whose weight was 8.25 or more pounds -- have increased levels of hormones that create a 'pro-carcinogenic environment.' This means that they have high levels of estrogen, low levels of anti-estrogen and the presence of free insulin-like growth factors associated with breast cancer development and progression," said lead author Dr. Radek Bukowski, professor of obstetrics and gynecology in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. "Women can't alter their pregnancy hormones, but can take steps to increase their general protection against breast cancer." Dr. Bukowski notes that breastfeeding, having more than one child, following a healthy diet and exercising have been shown to reduce breast cancer risk.

The study, published in the July 17 issue of PLoS ONE, builds on accumulating evidence that a woman's own birth weight and that of her children are linked to breast cancer. However, this is the first study to explore whether each is an independent risk factor. Dr. Bukowski's team examined two cohorts of women from distinct data sets:

? The Framingham Offspring Birth History Study, which has studied generations of women via medical examinations and laboratory assessments. Dr. Bukowski's team studied 410 women from this study, observed between 1991-2008, and maternal birth weight, infant birth weight and results of later examinations (e.g., breast cancer diagnosis) to determine breast cancer risk. The researchers also looked at data from the study on known breast cancer risk factors, such as age, race/ethnicity, body mass index, diabetes, use of hormone replacement therapy and maternal history of the disease, among others.

? The First and Second Trimester Evaluation of Risk for Aneuploidy (FASTER) trial, which examined pregnancy hormones in nearly 24,000 women at 15 U.S. clinical centers between 1999 and 2003. The study included assessments of the hormones that affect infant birth weight and breast cancer risk -- estriol (E3), anti-estrogen alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A).

Approximately 7.6 percent of the women from the Framingham cohort in this study were later diagnosed with breast cancer. The researchers found that the risk of breast cancer was two-and-a-half times higher in women whose infant's birth weight was in the top quintile compared with women whose infant weighed in the lower quintiles. Importantly, the risk was shown to be significant independent of the birth weight of the mother and traditional breast cancer risk factors.

Of the nearly 24,000 pregnancies studied in the FASTER trial, a strong positive relationship was observed between infant birth weight and E3, AFP and PAPP-A concentrations. For women whose infant's birth weight was in the highest quintile, there was a 25 percent increased risk of having a high E3/AFP ratio and PAPP-A concentration.

"Recent animal studies have suggested that breast stem cells, which are involved in the origins of breast cancer, may increase or decrease their number in response to hormone exposures, including ones during pregnancy," added Dr. Bukowski. "They retain a 'memory' of prior hormone exposure, which could explain the increased risk of breast cancer seen following pregnancy, especially in women with a large birth weight infant. The hormones create a long term effect that may lead to breast cancer later."

One limitation of this study is that the associations between large infants' birth weight and breast cancer risk and between infants' birth weight and hormonal environment during pregnancy were tested in different populations of women. Further research is needed to definitively demonstrate that the concentrations of pregnancy hormones mediate the relationship between large infant birth weight and breast cancer.

Subsequent studies will also focus on testing whether having an infant of high birth weight improves prediction of future breast cancer.

Literacy as a Competitive Advantage | Competitive Advantage ...

Literacy as a Competitive Advantage

I was reading an article by Charlie Adams called Will the Internet Make Grammar Obsolete. He is absolutely incensed at the lack of literacy on the Internet. His contention is that sloppy grammar, misspelling, and Internet abbreviations are so pervasive today that the new normal is standards that are so low as to be missing altogether.

He?s right, of course. But I would suggest that inept writing and speaking skills were increasing long before the Net became so popular.

In fact, I think one could argue that the Net has, in one sense at least, increased literacy. People who would never before have picked up a pen or sat down at a typewriter or word processor are now happily sending out emails, texts, blogs, Facebook comments, tweets, and so on. Indeed, people who would never pick up a book are spending hours reading on their computer screens, iPads, and SmartPhones.

But Adams is right that, for all the time people are spending reading and writing electronically, they are apparently spending zero time worrying about how to construct a sentence, much less a paragraph.

The new normal assumes that you don?t have to be clear or precise in what you are saying. It is the job of the reader to figure out your intent. And if he doesn?t get it? Oh, well? Communication is no longer the responsibility of the communicator. It is the job of the audience. If you?ve been following my blogs, you?ll see that this is eerily familiar to the problem with customer service.

So for all the millions and millions of words pumped out daily, there really isn?t all that much communication going on. (You should see some of the comments I get ? and don?t post ? on my blog. Sometimes I can?t even figure out what language the writer is supposed to be using, much less what he is trying to say.)

As Adams pointed out, this put-the-burden-on-the-reader approach has moved into web sites and blogs ? theoretically professional sales and market out-reach tools. Gross illiteracies are more common on small company sites than on large company sites. But even huge companies, with significant sums spent on their web presence and marketing efforts, show imprecise (not to say muddy) expositions of their value propositions, presumed competitive advantages, and product superiority ? all the reasons you should buy from them.

Think about it.

What does it say about the person or company trying to sell you something if he or it can?t clearly express himself and make it obvious why you should buy? If a company can?t be bothered to construct a paragraph, what does that imply about the care with which it crafts its products or delivers its services?

I would argue that in this era of ever-increasing disdain for the proper use of language, precise speech, concise writing, and a clear exposition of your position is the new competitive advantage. It will certainly set you apart from the crowd.
