Sunday at Mugello with Jules Cisek

Kawasaki is giving a modest update to its flagship model, the 2013 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R. Mostly touching up its work from 2011, the one intriguing feature of the 2013 Kawasaki ZX-10R is its new electronic steering damper, which adjusts the level of steering damping based on how fast the motorcycle is traveling. Kawasaki developed the damper with the help of a little Swedish company named ?hlins, and is the first manufacturer to use the new suspension from the famed suspension brand, which is sure to be a standard item on the bikes of other OEMs in the coming years ? just like the Honda Electronic Steering Damper (HESD) that Big Red debuted circa 2004.

KTM has debuted it latest ?ready to race? machine, the 2013 KTM Moto3 250 GPR production race bike. A for-sale-version of its Moto3 Championship contender, features forged aluminum OZ wheels instead of magnesium ones, and the production racer also comes sans Brembo brakes and WP suspension (items race teams would likely get from suppliers separately anyways). There is however one big technical difference, as KTM has reduced the bike?s maximum engine speed to 13,500 rpm, down from the 14,000 found on the factory bikes. This leaves the 2013 KTM Moto3 250 GPR production racer with just under 50hp on tap.

It remains to be seen how the high-reving Superquadro motor will fit into Ducati?s ?one-motor-fits-all? strategy, but the speculation is already becoming rife about a supersport version of the Ducati 1199 Panigale, and of course a streetfighter version as well. With the Panigale?s engine being an integral part of the superbike?s design, there is a definite challenge for Ducati?s design team in making the Emperor of the Sport Bike Kingdom look good naked. Until we see what Borgo Panigale can conjure up, we are lucky to have weekend couch jockey?s on the Ducati.ms forum who happen to have incredible photoshoping skills.

Set to debut the MV Agusta Rivale at EICMA this November, the newest model from the historic Italian is said to be a hypermotard-esque machine that is loosely based off the MV Agusta Brutale 675. Following the logical genesis of the Brutale 675 using the MV Agusta F3?s 675cc three-cylinder motor, most assumed that the MV Agusta Rivale would feature only chassis changes, and retain the same supersport-inspired motor. However, the news from Moto Revue puts that idea into doubt, and likely tips the Rivale to being an 800cc rival to bikes like the spied Ducati Hypermotard 848 and Husqvarna Nuda 900.

The final rubber stamp of approval to Audi AG?s acquisition of Ducati Motor Holding, the European Commission has cleared the transaction of any antitrust red tape. A deal that was over a year in the making, the German automaker bought the Italian motorcycle company for a cool ?860 million, including debt. Positioning Audi, and its parent-company Volkswagen, to take-on the likes of the BMW Group, the deal was met with mixed-emotions in the automotive and motorcycling communities during its announcement.

We could write a long list of what those involved in the Valentino Rossi-Ducati partnership have lost. Money, reputation, time, all have been lost in large quantities and on behalf of some of the most important people in motorbike racing. Smaller losses of various kinds have been incurred by many more people whose livelihoods are tied to Rossi?s success. But a huge number of people have lost something intangible but nonetheless important because of the inability of Rossi and Ducati to produce a winning package. Those many people who were attracted to motorcycle racing because first they felt an attraction to Valentino Rossi have lost something since his switch to Ducati.

As it stands now, electric motorcycles are basically conventional motorcycles with batteries and motors that replace fuel tanks and engines. It is the same basic offering that we have had since the turn of the century, except with three times the cost, forty times the refuel time, and a quarter of the range. While the big hold-up for electrics, battery technology, is still advancing rapidly, at the end of the day consumers are still be making apples-to-apples comparisons between internal combustion and electric motorcycles because only the most basic elements of this new technology is being offered by electric OEMs. Even I have a hard time looking at the market, and imagining a scenario where I would grab an electric motorcycle over its internal combustion counterpart.

BMW has updated its 800cc GS line, starting with the new 2013 BMW F700GS. An adventure bike with the road more in mind, BMW is differentiating the 2012 BMW F700GS from the 2103 BMW F800GS by using lower-spec suspension, cast wheels, a 19? front wheel, lower seat height, and lower horsepower output. Using the same 798cc four-valve parallel-twin liquid-coooled motor, the BMW F700GS gets a modest power increase over the BMW F650GS it is replacing, as peak power has been pushed to 75hp, up from the 71hp the F650GS made. Peak torque has also been boosted to 56.8 lbs?ft, while the curb weight is 209 kg (460 lbs).

This may not be strictly motorcycle-related, though we are pretty sure most motorcyclists can relate to the time and effort it takes to take apart a four-cylinder motor and put it back together again. As if refurbishing a motor bought off eBay, and swapping it out for a junked one that is still in the car wasn?t hard enough, our protagonist decided to document the whole process with thousands of photos. Originally only intending to use the snaps to ensure all the pieces went back together in the right spots, a short animated movie clip was born from his efforts.

With MotoGP adopting a CRT rule for the 2012 season, a provision that allows production motors to be used in a prototype chassis, the World Superbike Championship has been feeling its production-racing turf a bit infringed upon. Now whether or not the latest rule change from WSBK has anything to with what is going on between the two series is up for debate, but regardless for 2013 and onward, World Superbike teams will have to run faux-headlight decals on their race bikes ? in some sort of attempt to link what is on the track to what is sitting on dealership showroom floors.

Community chips in for new air conditioner

David Berry, executive pastor of The Mission, stands in the food pantry which has a temperature of 90 degrees, Friday, July 13, 2012 in Winter Haven, Florida.

Rick Runion / Ledger Media Group

Published: Sunday, July 15, 2012 at 8:33 a.m.
Last Modified: Sunday, July 15, 2012 at 8:33 a.m.

WINTER HAVEN - Things got pretty hot at The Mission last week when the air conditioner went kaput. So hot that the soup kitchen had to close for two days while administrators at the Winter Haven agency that gives aid to the homeless and needy scrambled for money.

As usual, they appealed to the church community to help replace the 25-year-old cooling system. And the community responded.

Approximately $4,000 was raised. A new five-ton air conditioner now hums behind the nearly 100-year-old, two-story building on East Central Avenue. Lunch and dinner, free to anyone in need, will resume Monday through Thursday, year in, year out.

But the emergency is yet another reminder that The Mission can no longer limp by on a wing and a prayer. That it has done so for almost 40 years is testament to the tenacity of its founder, Tom Beauregard, who started in 1973 with a foster home for boys.

Now in ill health, Beauregard, 70, has installed David Berry, 37, as executive pastor of the program that now serves primarily as a soup kitchen and community food and clothing pantry. Other services include laundry, showers, computer access and lockers for the homeless and their few possessions.

There are few if any other programs serving homeless men in greater Winter Haven. The Salvation Army gives overnight shelter to women and young children, but emergency overnight shelter for men is nonexistent, agency officials say.

Berry and his board of directors hope some day to provide beds and create a long-term transitional program for men. The goal in the short term is to build back a board of directors that has shrunk to five members from a high of 11.

The faith-based agency is hungry for like-minded business professionals with the savvy to woo the church community for greater support and to mount a serious capital campaign to raise needed funds.

"I believe if we had some Christian business people on our board it would help," said David Chadsey, one of the newer members of The Mission's board. "If our board were a little stronger and deeper, I think we could establish a financial plan that's a little more forward thinking."

For instance, the agency shouldn't have to go into panic mode every time an emergency arises, Chadsey said. "That's something that should be in our budget."

For many years The Mission was a small-scale operation, but the recent downturn in the economy has driven hundreds of people, especially families, to its doors.

The agency now serves 1,500 households on a monthly basis with only four paid employees and dozens of volunteers. The kitchen serves 200 lunches and 100 dinners daily, Monday through Thursday. The doors are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

It takes $300,000 a year to make ends meet, Chadsey said, "But our income for 2011 was only $250,000."

Most of that money comes from private donations while a handful of church partners provide about $2,400 a month, or about 10 percent of the yearly budget, Berry said.

He and Chadsey hope to get more churches on board.

"For a lot of years this mission was like a mom and pop," Berry said. "The days of serving 60 people are gone."

Berry's laundry list of pressing needs includes air-conditioning for the two-car garage that now serves as a food pantry. The heat diminishes the shelf life of bags of bread, boxes of pasta, cereal and other dry goods.

To minimize energy bills, executives hope to find a way to insulate the building and add energy-efficient windows. And the list of needs goes on.

"We have ideas but we don't have anybody to oversee fundraising or capital campaigns," Berry said.

"We work with local churches and we do devotions and share the gospel (with families in need). The cool part is we're not in competition with the local church," he said. "We're an extension. We fill the physical needs and together we work hand in hand in building people."

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, laid out its plan to develop and test-fly the hypersonic vehicle in a press release issued Friday (July 6). The so-called X-plane would travel at Mach 20 ? roughly 13,000 mph (20,900 kph) ? allowing the military to reach any spot on the globe in less than an hour.
Further, the vehicle would be "recoverable," according to the release ? meaning the government could get it back.

To help make all this happen, DARPA has started up a new program called Integrated Hypersonics. IH will build off previous Defense Department research into ultra-fast flight but will need to make some major strides of its own, officials said. [NASA's Vision of Future Air Travel (Gallery)]

Weather stops tandem lawn chair balloon flight

BEND, Ore. (AP) ? An Oregon gas station owner and an Iraqi adventurer trying to fly from Central Oregon to Montana in tandem lawn chairs suspended from party balloons made a hard landing Saturday after having to abort their flight due to thunderstorms ? but their craft kept flying.

Kent Couch and Fareed Lafta were about seven hours into their flight when they were forced to descend, coming down near a reservoir about 30 miles east of their starting point. But after they scrambled out of the contraption, it floated up again, flight organizer Mark Knowles said.

"They came down hard," Knowles said by cellphone. "The craft went back up. It's sitting up in the sky right above us."

Earlier Saturday, about 90 volunteers and several hundred onlookers counted down and then cheered as the pair lifted off from Couch's Shell gas station in Bend.

Volunteers had filled 350 5-foot diameter red, white, blue and black balloons with helium and tied them to Couch's homemade tandem lawn chair rig. The balloons were arranged in bunches to represent the colors of the U.S. and Iraqi flags. An American flag flew from the bottom of the framework supporting the chairs.

The duo safely cleared a two-story motel, a coffee stand and a light post, then floated about 30 miles north. Winds pushed them back to the south before sending them to the east, the direction they wanted to go.

But thunderstorms gathering in the region forced them to abort the flight, descending from an altitude of about 10,000 feet, Knowles said.

Before the flight, Couch said landing was the scariest part of his several lawn chair balloon flights.

"The landings are very tough," Couch said. "I don't think about the landings until I have to land. That's how I do it."

The two men had hoped to fly through the night across the mountains of Idaho and touch down Sunday morning somewhere in southwestern Montana.

Expecting to float at 15,000-18,000 feet, where temperatures drop to near zero, they packed sleeping bags to stay warm.

Their rig included 800 pounds of ballast ? red Kool-Aid in 40-gallon barrels. Besides a GPS, navigation gear, satellite phone, oxygen, two-way radios, eight cameras, and parachutes, they were carrying two Red Ryder BB rifles and a pair of blowguns to shoot out enough balloons to come to earth when the time is right.

Electronic gear was powered by a solar panel. A flare gun was tied onto the framework for emergencies. They also carried the ashes of a family friend to spread over the high desert.

Lance Schliep, an appliance repairman, helped Couch with the latest design, made entirely from items bought at local hardware stores and junk from Couch's garage.

"It's about as redneck as you can get," Couch said.

Lafta, a mountain climber and sky diver, said he had shared Couch's childhood dream of floating like a cloud. He sent Couch an email two winters ago after reading accounts of Couch's earlier flights.

The flight was a warm-up for plans to fly a tandem lawn chair balloon rig in Baghdad sometime in the future.

"My target is to inspire young people, especially in the Mideast," Lafta said. "I want to tell them, 'I didn't give up. Keep standing. Smile. This is the way to defeat terrorists.'"

Couch said receiving Lafta's email in the dead of winter, at a time he was bored, inspired him to go aloft again.

"I never really thought I would do it again," Couch said. "I thought I had had enough excitement.

"I started thinking, it sounds fun. It takes six months after you land for your brain to get over the fear and just the emotions."

They planned to fly over Iraq last year, but ran into problems getting permission from the government.

Couch has said he was inspired by a TV show about the 1982 lawn chair flight over Los Angeles by truck driver Larry Walters, who gained urban myth immortality.

Couch's first time up was in 2006, when he got only 99 miles before the balloons started popping and he had to bail out. In 2007, he flew 193 miles before running low on helium and landing in the sagebrush of Eastern Oregon.

In 2008, things went much more smoothly. After lifting off at dawn July 5 with the help of scores of volunteers, he floated at 35 mph across the high desert, reaching his goal of crossing the Idaho border. That's when he pulled out his trusty BB rifle and shot out enough balloons to come to earth in a pasture outside the tiny farming community of Cambridge, Idaho.

Couch was at it again in 2010, racing another lawn chair balloonist in a flight that went about 70 miles.

Michael Clarke Duncan: Hospitalized After Cardiac Arrest! Saved by Omarosa!

Actor Michael Clarke Duncan was hospitalized today following a cardiac arrest, as sources confirm The Green Mile star is in stable condition.

Duncan suffered a myocardial infarction early this morning, and his girlfriend Omarosa Manigault performed CPR on him around 2 a.m. The two-time Apprentice contestant was apparently able to successfully resuscitate the baritone actor upon finding him.

Duncan has been nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe, and most recently starred in the now-cancelled Fox show, The Finder. The show was a spin-off of the hit Fox show, Bones.

We here at THG wish Duncan a full, speedy recovery. This marks the first time we've ever been happy Omarosa was around.
